Thanks to Alex for sending news about Saxbys closing in Dupont (1309 19th Street, NW) after today’s service.

Saxbys closed their downtown location back in 2016. Updates when we learn what becomes of the Dupont space. For Dupont folks, Philz will probably scratch that itch.

From a press release:

“On November 23,2019, Creative Grounds DC, a unique art space and coffee bar will finally open its doors to the public. The two-storey, approximately 2,000 square-foot space located in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. is a community space for teaching and showcasing art while serving ethically sourced coffee and food goods from local vendors.

Husband and wife duo, Kenn Blagburn and Asmara Sium originally conceived this project in 2017, in response to the need for more enriching organized activities for Bloomingdale’s increasing family and child population, and as a permanent space for galvanizing and promoting D.C.’s unique arts and cultural communities. Thanks to Brent for sending word. For Five’s website says:

“For Five was founded in 2010 by two best friends from Queens who wanted to introduce specialty coffee by New Yorkers for the world. Stefanos Vouvoudakis and Tom Tsiplakos, the founders of For Five, met in third grade in their Whitestone, Queens classroom and have been working together ever since. The two ventured into the specialty coffee roasting and wholesale business and built their roasting facility in Maspeth, Queens. At first, they sold their roasted beans to restaurants and other wholesale accounts before opening their first cafe on West 46th Street in Manhattan in 2016 — right in Times Square.” (more…)

We keep chugging along thanks to our awesome patrons. In fact you are more than patrons, you have become friends. We love coming to the shop every day to talk about our kids, your kids, the weekend plans, the work-related stuff, the teams we love. (more…)

Last week when we spoke about Starbucks closing in Chinatown – lots of folks recommended Chinatown Coffee Co. (among others) as a good alternative. And so it goes.
