The theme of the 5pm Post will change every day and per your suggestions will be a mix of philanthropic or simply fun things to do as well as random unique DC features and events. It’ll be a bit of a hodgepodge but if you have any suggestions, recommendations or photos capturing DC pride please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com.

“Dear PoP,

Kareem Murphy and DeWayne Davis of Maryland (formerly of the Petworth neighborhood) have been chosen as one of six deserving finalist couples in the national Freedom2Wed online contest.

You can see Kareem and DeWayne’s contest video submission here.

To win, they need the support and votes of the DC community. The general public can vote for Kareem and DeWayne until the end of September by going to vote here.

The couple met as fellow Howard University students in 1991, fell in love, and have been building a life together in the Washington, DC area for the past 19 years. The couple was one of the first in line for a marriage license in early March of this year when the District was afforded equal marriage rights but given the economic times, they have yet to celebrate a wedding with family and friends.

Freedom2Wed was conceived by a group of prominent Washington-area wedding vendors in honor of the passage of the DC Marriage Equality Act. The winning couple will receive the wedding of a lifetime, valued at over $100,000.”

Good luck Kareem and DeWayne!

Congrats to anonymous with:

“Arlington Cemetery? Damn it, I’m on the friggin Blue line.”

In case anonymous doesn’t come forward to claim their t-shirt, congrats to herewegoagain who shares my paranoia:

“I always new Metro was bugged.”

A reader caught this shot Tues. morning and writes:

“Thought this was an interesting scene from my metro commute this morning that you and/or your readers might like. A live praying mantis!”

I can’t wait to see your captions for this one. Winner picked Friday but if I have a serious favorite by 6pm tomorrow I’ll pick an extra winner so I can give a shirt at the PoP happy hour at Duffy’s Wed. night.

In one could be a first the winner goes to the same person who took the photo, I think, Congrats to Award with:

” Just wag your tail and look cute, she said. Before you know it you’ll be adopted to a loving home with a happy family. Boy I wish I had never listened to that b____”

Runner up to Mel with:

“What, you’ve never had a baby-sitter cancel on you at the last minute?”

Winners can pick up your PoP t-shirts at the next PoP Happy Hour Wed., Aug. 11th.

This is just a bizarre photo. It makes me laugh just looking at it. Your captions in the comments and winner picked Friday. For those who are owed shirts (new batch just came in!) you can pick up your shirts at the next PoP Happy Hour Wed., Aug. 11th.

It was a lot of fun going through everyone’s past and present favorite tennis players.

Congratulations to miscue 9:57 July 23rd:

“Growing up: Björn Borg–my first racquet was a warped, wooden Borg hand-me-down from my Uncle Bob, who also had long hair and wore a sweatband playing.

Now: I still root for Serena Williams, based on watching her win the 1999 US Open. She’s been at the top for years now, but her emotional response to her first win there got me all choked up and it’s carried over the past decade.”

and Behrad 9:44am July 23rd:

“Growing up: Pistol Pete Sampras!
Now: The Swiss Master, Roger Federer!”

Each winner will receive a pair of VIP section tickets for the finals on August 8th!

Please email me directly at princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com so I can get your full names for Will Call.

If you didn’t win you can still buy tickets here.

I had heard rumors but had never seen the lines outside of Georgetown Cupcake’s new location on M St, NW. Insane. This is of the post Obama, Ben’s Chili Bowl scale. Thought it might make a good caption. Yours in the comments and winner picked Friday.

A few weeks ago we spoke about the great field of tennis players for the 2010 Legg Mason tennis tournament.  The notables include – Andy Roddick, John Isner (the guy who just had the 11 hour match in Wimbledon), Lleyton Hewitt, and Robin Soderling. The tournament takes place July 31 – August 8, 2010 and is a tune-up for the US Open. If you don’t win you can buy  tickets here.

So the organizers were kind enough to give away two pairs of VIP section tickets for the Finals! To win the tickets just say in the comments who your favorite player was growing up and who your favorite player is now (men or women). I’ll announce the winner next Friday. Oh yeah, if you win tickets you have to promise to submit one or two photos of the Finals to the PoPville flickr pool as well!

Lots of great entries this week. Plus I placed a new order for t-shirts yesterday so small sizes will becoming in 7-10 days. Plus, the next PoP Happy Hour is going to be the first or second Thurs. in Aug. Anyone have a preference?

Congrats to Eckingtonite with:

“Hitchhiking to Florida; no need for restroom stops.”

Honorable mention to Bradford with:

“Sadly, this was the last photo of Ms. Helen Dietrichtaken before she was found drunk and delirious in the Washington Monument reflecting pool – yet another apparent victim of one of a growing number of incidents that the authorities are referring to as “docent hazing.”
