And speaking of bikes, 14th St, NW near the Tivoli in Columbia Heights got a nice new lane:

“Dear PoP,

On Thursday the 19th at 2:08 pm my bike was stolen right outside of my Apartment at 1701 Park Road NW. I got the two guys on video and was wondering if I could post the video on your site and ask your readers if any of them know the identity of the two youths. The police essentially told me they will not do anything unless I can call them and tell them that I can see the suspects and they should come get them. Give the video about 10 seconds to start and then you can see the whole thing in real time.”

If anyone thinks they know their identity please email me at princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll forward your info to the reader.

“Dear PoP,

I recently had my silver and navy blue Trek bicycle stolen from the corners of 13th and G Streets, NW. It was the middle of the day and I was only in Au Bon Pain for 20 minutes. Now, I’m bikeless and am faced with two daunting tasks: getting a new bike and figuring out where to purchase it. I do want to get a road bike as it is faster (and sleeker) than my old hybrid bike, but with the dearth of bike shops in DC, I don’t know where to begin. I’ve been to City Bikes in Georgetown, and their repair services are reasonably priced, but their bikes are not. I’d like to know what your readers believe to be the best bicycle value in DC. Would you (and they) be able to help me out?”

I seem to recall there were a lot of fans of Rollin Cycles now located at 1314 14th Street, NW. But I know there are also devotees of Capitol Hill Bikes located at 719 8th Street SE (Barracks Row). What about the one in Adams Morgan? Or the new one on 14th St, NW just north of V?

What’s your favorite bike shop in the city? Most reasonably priced?

“Dear PoP,

This bicycle has been left unclaimed at Duffy’s Irish Pub (2106 Vermont Ave. NW) locked to the bike rack in front for almost a week now. Its a beautiful bike and obviously well cared for by its owner.

It is a vintage cruiser-type bike, rust red in color, with a white wire basket in front, vintage bell and a Honolulu registration tag on the rear (22035) from 1966. It also has a sticker that states ‘mend your fuelish ways’.

Can you post this before it is declared abandoned and taken in by MPD for safekeeping (which almost gaurantees the owner will not be found)?

Duffy’s is closed until Thursday, so after Thursday they can either go directly to Duffy’s and let him know, or they can shoot me an email ([email protected]). Even if it’s after it’s taken in for safekeeping, I can help them retrieve it.”

That is a sweet bike!

And a reader lost some keys in northern Columbia Heights

“Dear PoP,

I seem to have lost a set of keys on Sunday afternoon. There’s a chance I dropped them on the way in from the grocery store. (It was the Harris Teeter, actually, and I drove home so if they did fall, it was somewhere near the car/house.) Could you see if any of your readers picked them up? There’s a car key plus four other keys on a Coach key ring.”

If anyone happened to pick up these keys please email me and I’ll put you in touch with the reader.

From an email:

“The basic gist is that it’s like Amazing Race on bikes, all over the Hill – starting at the North Eastern Market Metro Plaza and winding up at a cool party at the H Street Country Club. The fun gets started at 5pm on August 28.

This is a cool event for a great cause – the Ready, Willing and Working program – hope to see you there!”

Full press release after the jump. (more…)

You can see the full map here and eventually find more info here but already some are not happy. On the Columbia Heights listserv one resident notes:

“In our whole neighborhood – and I’m including Park View, Pleasant Plains and Petworth for good measure, a huge part of residential NW – there are four stations: one at DC USA at 14th/Irving. There’s one at 11th/Monroe. There’s one at the Petworth Branch Library at Georgia/Kansas. And there’s one at Rock Creek Church/Warder.

That’s it! Nothing at Meridian Hill Park. Nothing at Howard University. Nothing on Georgia between Kansas and Florida Aves. Nothing on 14th between Irving and U Streets or 11th between Monroe and U. No station at the Washington Hospital Center, or the Banneker Pool, or the new Bruce-Monroe Park. Nothing at all in southern Columbia Heights.”

Do you think the Columbia Heights/Park View/Pleasant Plains and Petworth neighborhoods are being underserved? How ’bout the rest of the city?

“Dear PoP,

This is the bike that my dog and I found in Rock Creek Park. It was clearly ditched there. I called MPD and they will pick it up but don’t have a list of stolen bikes to match it up. So, I thought I would send it to you in hopes that one of your readers is or knows the owner.”

If this is your bike please email me directly at princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll put you in touch with the reader who found it. Please note that there is a combination lock attached and you will have to have the combination to prove that it is yours. Thanks.
