Phenomenal.

Phenomenal.

From a reader:
“I just noticed you finally saw the new mural on Irving! The artists are from the Latin American Youth Center’s Art and Media House (located 3035 15th St NW). On Wednesday, August 20th, they are celebrating the grand opening for a new installation called “Dos Caras Del Cambio/Two Faces of Change.” The installation will run from August 20th til October 10th. The grand opening reception is from 3pm-5pm.”

I thought this one was quite unusual. Pretty sweet.

I think that’s a mosaic, yeah? Built right into the wall. Super cool. And nice house numbers to boot.

I especially liked that it was on a pick up truck.

From the director:

Where: E Street Theatre (Landmark) 555 11th Street NW Washington, DC 20004 (entrance on E Street between 10th and 11th Street)

These are both fantastic. I wonder if students painted them?

Some serious DC pride! Represent. I dig it.
Thanks to Heather for sending:
“If you’re a Mt. Pleasant resident or work in the bar/restaurant industry in the Metro area, you can submit your work to hang (and sell) in the newly renovated Tonic bar space.
More details here:
http://www.districtplayground.
For those of you outside the precise neighborhood but interested in participating, take note of this tacked on at the bottom of the page: “We define Mount Pleasant by the ANC 1D map. Harvard St. on the south, Adams Mill Rd. to the west up to Piney Branch Rd on the north and 16th St. on the east. If we learn of significant interest from residents of Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan/Petworth who want to participate, we may reevaluate our submission requirements for future exhibitions.”

I love stumbling upon places like this. Granted when I was buzzed in and started politely asking questions one of the proprietors looked at me as though I was crazier than Howard Hughes…but l can forgive them that because this place is pretty damn cool. It has been open for 15 years and Ms. Jill Hinckley has been teaching for over 40 years. If you dig pottery you can get some great info on classes from Web site. The gallery/shop is located at 1707 Kalorama Road.
The brochure says “Hinckley Pottery is a privately owned studio. The studio is furnished with 14 electric wheels and a treadle wheel. Ed. note: I’m not familiar with a treadle wheel but I assume it is pretty bad ass. There are two electric kilns, two gas kilns and a propane fired raku kiln. Stoneware, porcelain, and raku clays are available, and students are encouraged to work in a variety of clay bodies. Hinckley’s gallery is adjacent to the classroom. It displays and sells works by Jill Hinckley and visiting potters.” Class schedule after the jump. (more…)
