From the City of Takoma Park:

“Takoma Park is more than 100 miles away from the Atlantic Ocean, but a 17-foot-long octopus somehow found its way here and wrapped its giant tentacles around the downtown clock tower.
In a public art project commissioned by the City of Takoma Park, fiber artist Stacy Cantrell crocheted the huge octopus in the City’s colors of orange, yellow, green, and blue. With help from her husband and a friend, she installed the creature recently on the clock tower in Ward Sinclair Plaza at the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Carroll Avenue. Then she watched the smiles and dropped jaws from surprised people walking by. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve got a crowd source question. There’s an older black gentlemen that I’ve seen a half dozen times sitting in the middle of the lower level of the l’enfant plaza metro station. He’s always working away creating absolutley incredible black and white scetches on a large surface (please forgive my complete lack of knowledge about art related terminology). I have seen small photos of the subject (usually pets or people) in the corner that he uses to create the beautiful sketch. I can only assume he’s down there soliciting from metro riders and creating a custom works of art for a fee.

I’ve been looking for him for a while and found him in his usual spot today, but he had drawn a large crowd and I was in a rush to get home and walk the dog. I did see him hand a business card to a kid so I’m hoping someone out there has his contact information. I’d love to commission a picture or two so if anyone knows how to make that happen without spending all day scouring metro stations I’d really appreciate it! His stuff looks so good I’ve gotten goosebumps looking at somebody else’s dog!”

“Laissez-fair: A “Natural” Wine Social
June 30th, 2:00 – 7:00 p.m.
1402 H St. NE

Laissez-faire (/ˌlesāˈfer/); from French: laissez faire, lit. ‘let do’, a policy or attitude of letting things take their own course, without interfering.

‘Natural wine’ is the new hotness. What is it? Why does it matter? Laissez-fair is your chance to sample and get some knowledge dropped about high-quality, low-intervention wine!

We’ll have viticulturists, sommeliers, and other wine professionals giving talks, and hanging out to answer questions. Additionally, you’ll get to enjoy the final weekend of “Congruent”, a pop-up art gallery from No Kings Collective. (more…)

Thanks to Kate for sending from Connecticut Ave in Kalorama.

The Post reported:

“First lady Melania Trump appeared before cameras Wednesday, accompanying her husband, President Trump, at a briefing on hurricane season preparedness at the Washington headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency — a seemingly routine event that wouldn’t normally be newsworthy.”

So to be honest, I was surprised how viral the post about The Phillips Collection being free for those under this 30 summer was – so you like art? I like art too – so let’s talk art!! Where are your favorite spots to soak some in? I noticed this new Gallery was coming to Florida Ave – so I’d be interested to know, in addition to favorite museums, are there any galleries you like to check out from time to time too?

galeria love coming soon

“Dear PoPville,

For the past two nights, I’ve seen this light sculpture (?) atop some apartment or condo building on 16th St NW, north of The Chastleton and across the street-ish from the Scottish Rite Temple. The pictures don’t exactly do it justice; it’s a curved green neon rod with a red bit at the bottom. It sure wasn’t there Monday or Tuesday nights, at least that I know of. It seems to go on around 9:30 pm and goes off maybe about 11 pm. Could you help figure out what the deal is with it?”
