I took my first walkabout in Eckington this past weekend and thanks to a reader saw some cool buildings (both old and new). The building above are located on R Street NE between 2nd and 3rd. It’s the first rowhomes/condos I’ve seen in this style. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

This building (4400 Masschusetts Ave, NW) knocked my socks off. I liked it so much when I was in the area last week that I walked all the way back there from Petworth. It was well worth the effort. Sadly, my camera couldn’t get the whole building in one shot so I had to take a few which doesn’t do it perfect justice but you can a feel for it.

What do you think of the style? Anyone check out the art?

After the jump I also ran into hundreds of folks walking (I think) to combat breast cancer. (more…)

This is a super cool one. I dig the Med. style roof and the stone reminds me of house from 1700s.

I thought I’d round out the week with a couple more cool buildings I spotted around downtown. The one above at 1100 New York Avenue is one of my favorites. What year do you think it was built?

This one is from 950 H Street, NW that I thought was super cool because the glass part sticks out which kinda reminded me of a big sail. Dig it?

A reader sent this renderings from a few libraries around town. I’m sorry there are so small but that was the largest size I could get. Above is what the Petworth Library is proposed to look like after extensive renovations. The project is slated to be completed in Fall 2009, though that seems highly ambitious. The libraries below are supposed to be open to the public by Spring 2010. Which one do you like best?

Here is what Shaw’s is supposed to look like:

Anacostia’s:

Tenleytown:

and Benning:

Though actually I really dig the steps leading up to it. Pretty unusual. I dig it.

I really like some of these rowhomes that have a bit of deep front yard. I can’t remember if I’ve asked this before but if your neighborhood becomes “safer” would you ever remove the bars from the first floor?

A number of folks have mentioned the Cato building located at 1000 Mass. Ave, NW. I have to say, it does look pretty cool. Does the glass part provide extra used space or is just for style?  (I can’t tell from the photo.) What do you think of the look, thumbs up or down?

You can tell that the building behind that huge billboard is super cool. What a shame and a bit ironic, yeah?
