“Rooster (Gallus gallus) at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, in Prince George’s County, MD. The out-of-place male chicken was running free around the park, mainly along the waterfront and by the playground. There weren’t any rangers or other park officials around, otherwise I would have mentioned and inquired about the welfare of the chicken. Not sure if he is an escapee from a farm, a released pet, or whatnot. I hope he’s OK. Should I call some sort of farm animal rescue organization? He didn’t seem to be in any obvious distress, but can they survive on their own?”

“Our dog Sophie died on Thursday after a long fight with liver cancer. To those in the neighborhood who have seen us walking slowly around Petworth between Grant Cir. and Sherman Cir., you’ll remember her: big black shepherd with golden eyes, large ears, and a salt-and-pepper muzzle. She looked out for me, my partner, and our two little dogs and will be missed incredibly. The response from others to Sophie was always interesting – some feared her for her intimidating look (we were often asked if she was a black wolf), many respected her and gave her appropriate distance, others admired her dignified, beautiful appearance, and those that got to know her came to understand what a sweet, lovely spirit she was. Sophie was an undemanding dog and was most concerned that her other pack members (including the humans) were safe and happy. But the loss of her energy in our lives makes clear the incredible role she filled. She lived in Petworth for almost exactly one year after spending most of her life in Vermont. She loved Petworth – loved her twice-daily walks, loved keeping watch of the many interesting people and dogs that passed our house, and loved the high squirrel population. She was deeply loved and will be missed.”

“Chuck and Peter of Logan Circle are taking a break from their busy schedules.
Cool fact: Peter was a PoP rescue cat from two years ago – his owner considers herself very lucky to have found him (hopefully Peter feels the same!)”
