It’s all about the second story window. And the balcony, of course.

I was quickly whisked away from this door. But I got the picture!

Sweet Mango Cafe, located on New Hampshire Ave across from the Metro, has its roof deck in full effect. Mmm, jerk chicken… I still love the sign that says “Home of the World Famous Jerk”. I know it’s a flimsy sign, I don’t support that, I simply support the message.

I can’t remember if I’ve asked a question like this before but I’m seriously curious to know how much it would cost to renovate a home like this one. Let’s not say top of the line but not a crappy job either. What are we talking about, $100,000? $200,000? More?

I’m super intrigued about this one because it is so close to the Petworth metro. It is located at 3810 8th Street, NW. The flyer says it has 5 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. In the remarks it says: “Spacious and light filled…within a 10 minute walk of Petworth Metro. Many improvements have been made including upgraded kitchen and baths…Fenced in rear yard with 2 car parking…Property is being sold “AS IS” however shows well.”

Curious that they say within a 10 minute walk of metro because it’s really a two minute walk to metro if that. But anyway, what you’ve been waiting for $550,000. I know people are going to go nuts but remember how close it is to the metro. Now have at it, good deal or not?

Dear PoP,

We have lived in Harlem for the past 5 years and Petworth seems like a similar type of neighborhood. Work is in the 1200 block of Taylor and we would really love to be close enough that hubby could walk to work. Also, since we live in NYC now we don’t have a car and would really like to avoid getting one.

So my question to you is with the above mentioned criteria can you suggest some areas in Petworth? It seems to be a pretty large neighborhood and I am interested in being close to the action in the neighborhood but also within the parameters listed above.

We are looking to rent but would love to buy! I am just a little nervous about the market and the move to a new area. I think it would be better if we lived there for awhile before we starting looking. Although, I have been enticed buy some rowhouses I have seen online.

Currently, we pay rent of about $1475 for a 3 bedroom, which is pretty ridiculous for NYC standards. Just from the research I have gathered that seems a little ridiculous for Petworth standards, too. Anyway, we would like to stay at or below and don’t need three bedrooms. A 1 bedroom is fine.

I am not a huge fan of “cookie cutter” apartments so something with a little charm might be nice. Last, but not least we do have a dog. He is used to apartments and not having a yard but it seems yards are more plentiful in DC so that might be nice.

One more thing.. don’t know how much it matters but we are 29 (me) and 32(hubby). He is a musician and we enjoy going out. I don’t know if there are pubs in walking distance in Petworth but that might be nice. Noise isn’t that big of deal either. We live on a pretty busy street right now. There is a post office across the street and that makes the street pretty lively.

Also, I am already used to lugging groceries/laundry several blocks, too.

Thanks again!

DC Bound

My response after the jump but of course please add your suggestions in the comments. (more…)

Whenever I pass this grafitti I always wonder if they are referring to tree bark or the bark of a dog. I choose to believe the vision was one of a vicious dog barking. Anyway, a reader writes in with a seriously cool request.

“My wife and I just purchased a house in Shaw and are looking for a local graffiti artist to paint our garage door. We would love it if you have any suggestions or know anyone we could get in touch with.”

If you know of anyone you can leave contact info in the comment section or email me directly and I’ll send it on to the reader.

At least that’s what I originally thought the sign said. Then I was thinking, what the hell is a historic basement? Did something historic happen in the basement. Oh, Easement. Historic Easement. Right, right, right.

Ed. Note: “Right, right, right” should be pronounced with a British accent.

I know I’ve blogged about the new condo building the Floridian, located near V and Sherman by the 9:30 Club, but I’ve never seen this section in its full glory before. Seriously, what the hell is this? I’m feeling 70s nostalgia here, yeah? Alright, for real, thumbs up or thumbs down? Maybe I’m being too harsh, if every building looked the same we’d have a pretty boring city. But I’m a little hesitant about this one.

The signs themselves are fairly typical. But my question to you is, why are they planted in someone’s front yard? That homeowner must’ve seriously snapped one day. This is my vision of him coming home that fateful day: “Maude! Maude! Those damn dogs did it again! I warned them! Get me my wrench!!!!”

Ed. note: I in no way condone nor intend to trivialize the seriousness of rogue dog waste.
