A reader writes: “When we moved into our row house in Columbia Heights last summer, the bathroom was, for lack of a better word, gross. The floor was covered with generic, white tile that looked like it had been there since 1912 and the tile and grout were nasty no matter how many times we cleaned the floor. The tub was functional, but damaged and had a bad patch job that looked like a big grey splotch in the middle of the tub. The shower tile was small, white tile that made the bathroom look like a YMCA shower stall. There was a mess of tangled, exposed radiator pipes in the corner of the ceiling. All of this sucked because we only have one bathroom in the house.
So, we found a reliable renovator (two man team), spent about $5,000 total in materials and labor, and re-did the bathroom. We put in new floor tile and grout with “river rock” style baseboard decorations, new blue-grey paint on the walls, new travertine tiles with a funky design in the shower, replaced the shower curtain with glass doors, had the exposed pipes dry-walled in, installed new fixtures, and re-glazed the tub so it looks like new.”

Back in early March I wrote that Cafe Collage was set to reopen. And open it has. You can’t miss it, it is located on T Street just east of Saint Ex. Apparently Sat. May 10th was World Fair Trade Day and Cafe Collage was celebrating the event in style. They had a special traditional coffee roasting (see photo above – I’m not sure what the popcorn was about but hey who doesn’t like popcorn?) as well as a traditional Ethiopian musician. The musician was fantastic. Apparently the musician, Shambed Belayneh, is a renowned player of an instrument called the Maskino. It is a one stringed instrument that Mr. Belayneh used to play very melancholy tunes. While he wasn’t singing in English I was told he sang about coffee and traditional folk lore. It was awesome. Additionally, the cafe itself was super cool. It had two floors and was very tastefully decorated. I’m not quite sure why some folks are upset with this cafe. I’d think one would feel pretty lucky to have an Ethiopian owned coffee shop nearby. Did anyone catch the musician? Or check out the cafe? How does it compare to its earlier incarnation? I was scouting for “cool city signs” when I found this corner store. I think it’s awesome that the one thing they choose to highlight is ice cubes. I mean I like ice cubes and all, don’t get me wrong, but is that what needs to be celebrated. Well, I guess it’s cool that you can get them delivered…

I often see owls on roofs, I guess they’re there to scare off the pigeons or something. This is the first time I’ve seen one on the ground. I’m not sure if you can tell but this owl is huge and quite menacing. I’m not sure if it’s there for decoration or to scare off pigeons or toddlers…

I love randomly walking through alleys and discovering these cool murals. They continue to knock my socks off.

I’ve been noticing some individuality lately with these sidewalk strips of lawn. This one has a cool bamboo fence. I’m sure they’ll probably plant some cool goods to match the fence.

Back in October this wall was struck by a car. They finally fixed it and it looks fantastic. I’m glad they used the nicer stones rather than the cinderblock that you can see to the right of the photo. You can see what the wall looked like before it was fixed here.
