Dang, I can’t find the cents symbol on my keyboard. A long time ago I had a little contest to see what the name actually said. The answer, of course, was Foreign Exchange. 4NXC is located at 1019 U Street right across the street from the 10 Street side of the U Street metro. Ed. note: I would have liked to written the word street a few more times in the previous sentence but I was tapped out. When you first enter the store it is a bit uncomfortable as you have to buzz in before gaining entry. Fortunately, that discomfort vanishes immediately as you enter a bright and lively space and are greeted by the beautiful proprietor, Grace. Grace, 27, has owned the shop for nearly a year and is among the most enthusiastic people I have met on my journeys around town. I asked her how she chose this particular location and she told me that she grew up in DC and felt that the area was really up and coming. She also cited the diversity as one of the great things about the neighborhood. She came up with the name of the store 8 years ago when she was “just goofing around” and realized it was a really great name that would be a great conversation starter.

The layout of the store is beautiful. It is a nice space that has two distinct sections. While her shop originally featured exclusively women’s items she has recently expanded the merchandise to include men’s items as well. Her merchandise comes from all over the world including Paris, Thailand, Africa and elsewhere. I asked Grace to describe the merchandise and she replied that it is “trendy, fresh and fun”. She likes the fact that her store is unique and carries items that are a “little bit more edgy”. She also notes that she has pieces for everyone from inexpensive to high end. You can get a pair of earings for $10 or a linen dress for $300. In addition to clothing the store also carries jewelry, perfume, shoes, handbags and other accessories. So next time you are in the area of U Street before heading to 14th Street, it is worth a trip a few blocks east to check out this great store. Lots of photos of the interior after the jump. Now remember all posts that have the word “scuttlebutt” in them must be taken with a grain of salt. However, a particularly good source has emerged who will be known as the Park Road Prognosticator (PRP). So PRP has tracked down a phenomenal scoop. Apparently 11th Street Deli has been sold. In and of itself that would be a sad thing. But for the fact that a number of sources are saying that the new owner plans on opening a wine bar and pastry shop! I’m telling you 11th Street keeps getting better and better! Has anyone else heard this rumor?

Hey PoP,

So, what would you do if you found the back security gate of an abandoned house next to you wide open? What would you do if it were right next door?

Thanks,
Worrier

Dear Worrier,

If I found the back security gate to an abandoned house wide open I would call 311. But before I called 311 I’d think to myself, wait a second, do I call 311 or do I call 911? I’d wonder does 311 even exist anymore? Then I’d mutter some curses and question why the hell they changed the 311 – 911 system. And ultimately I’d call 911. I’d also talk to some of my neighbors and ask if they knew what was going on. If I was feeling particularly bold I might close the gate a bit so it didn’t look so obviously wide open. I’d be sure to check back on it the next day to make sure it was secured. If it was still not secured the next day after calling 911 I’d follow up with a call to my Ward community outreach person and let them know the problem. Hopefully one of those two steps would resolve the problem. Let us know what happens.

Cheers,
PoP

Anyone have other ideas?

I assume it some sort of security measure. Have you ever seen a bunch of metal spikes like this before? You think it’s to keep out people or animals? Or maybe it is the remnants from a David Blaine stunt?

Awesome sign outside a barber shop. “Get It Right” is just an awesome slogan. When do you think this sign first went up – 50s, 60s, or 70s?

I was trying to get another good contrast of old school row houses against the backdrop of a new condo building but I’m not sure this one worked. For some reason, I really do enjoy checking out the back of well maintained strips of row houses.

Thanks to a reader for sending in this incredible photo. Quite tragic, this looks like it was a majestic tree in its day. The reader writes that this is a “down tree on Madison near Georgia Ave. It makes your wonder about how deep the roots are on other trees”. Incredible photo but very sad. So can big trees like that, located near sidewalks, have enough depth for their roots?

Another beaut! Check out the stonework above it as well. And if you have to have security bars these ones are pretty sweet. I guess, all around bad ass is the best way to sum it up.
