Now this would an appropriate use of dope sky as an adjective. I stumbled upon this church after wandering around the Crestwood neighborhood. This is a Russian Orthodox Cathedral located at 4001 17th Street, NW. It is pretty spectacular.

But a funny thing that happened to me as I was taking photos a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses approached me and asked if they could give me some literature. I said sure. Then they asked if this was where I went to church and I replied no, I go to the 9:30 club. One of the ladies looked at me quizzically and then pointed to the cover of the Awake! pamphlet she had handed me and said ok but ask yourself: Are we living in the last days? Man, that would suck walking around everyday thinking “we are living in the last days”. Shit, if we were living in the last days I’d head straight to the 9:30 club.

Well, sorry for that aside. Some more cool photos of the church after the jump including a pretty sweet door. (more…)

So I checked out the Crestwood yard sale this weekend and I, uh, was pretty surprised by this mannequin. I mean it’s a yard sale right? A bit much for a yard sale. Unless they were selling the mannequin, damn why didn’t I think to inquire? I guess she does look a little bit like Kim Cattrall… I’ll have to go back when I get my Vespa.

And a nice dog too. I particularly like these stone walls that get filled with flowers. I love catching folks in action as they are planting. It never ceases to amaze me how folks take such pride in their gardens big and small. A perfect way to build community and neighborliness. And what a uniter. It’s nice to see something that so many people from all different backgrounds love. I see old folks gardening, new folks gardening, white folks, black folks, latino folks… I have found the great uniter and it is not a Bush rather it is a simple garden.

Thanks to a reader for sending me an update on what the 2200 block of 14th and W will look like. As usual DC MUD has the skinny including renderings.

They say: “Five buildings in the 2200 block of 14th Street (2203, 2205, 2207, 2209, 2211) were approved for demolition by the DC Historic Planning Board as part of the new Anthony Bowen YMCA and 14W project by DC-based developer Perseus Realty, LLC and YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.”

That’s going to be almost DC USA wild when it is completed.

This was a bizarre site just for the reason that it seemed to be on the side of a normal house. Cool.

So is this what we’re going to have to resort to when oil goes to $200 a barrel?

Had to show off another sweet vestibule. Check out the tile on the floor as well. Bonus point if you can guess what state is hanging on the right hand wall. Minnesota?

“Should I really be trespassing in a yard where the owner has a punching bag hanging from a tree?”

Ed. note: I wasn’t trespassing, got to love the zoom. Nevertheless too funny not to win. You can pick up your t-shirt at the happy hour tonight.

I think this awesome house is now a school of some sort. It is located on the 1300 block of Shepherd.

Thanks to a reader for alerting me to this cool building. His email said it was a triangle building located near the new Floridian Condos on 9th by the 9:30 club. So it only took me about a half an hour walking up and down 9th street before I gave up and finally found it on 10th Street. It was well worth the journey though as this is a wild building. Do you like the style. Ed. note: I’m still cursing my camera for taking these damn whacked pictures. Check out another angle after the jump. (more…)
