Normally, I totally dig unusual planters but I have mixed feelings about this one. It kind of reminds me of a car parked on one’s lawn if you know what I mean. What do you think – pretty cool or an eyesore?

Walking up 13th Street I spotted this parrot enjoying the Saturday sun. Not a sight I see everyday but pretty cool. And this parrot talked more than Steve Buscemi in Fargo.

Ed. Note: Last set of pictures with the pinkish hue. I promise it’ll be back to normal on Monday. What’s up with the vinyl in the middle?

Looking Glass Lounge, 3634 Georgia Ave., 7pm – late. Mojitos and happy hour prices all night. I’ll be the guy wearing the PoP t-shirt to his own his own PoP happy hour. And I’m cool with that. See you tonight.

A few weeks ago I wrote about a couple of the grocery options in Mount Pleasant. I love that I live in a neighborhood that’s got some flavor and one where I have more options than Giant and Whole Foods. However, there has been more than one occasion when I was in need of some produce in a pinch and the selection at Bestway or International Progresso was looking a little less than fresh. That’s why I get a little giddy come spring when the Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market opens up just a stone’s throw from home. May 3 was the first official day of the season and they’ll be open every Saturday right in the heart of Mount Pleasant (at 17th, Lamont and Mt. Pleasant Streets) from 9am -1pm until November 22.

I haven’t been to too many of the other area Farmers’ Markets, but I do like that this one is not only closer to home, but also that it seems to be a bit more intimate than the markets in Dupont Circle and Penn Quarter. It seems that the “neighborhood-y” vibe Mount Pleasant’s got going on spills over into the market as well. Everyone’s just happily milling about (sometimes to the sounds of live music), soaking up the sun, and checking out the goods. And goods there are!

The great thing about the Farmers’ Market is that it changes just a little each week. Through November there will be a revolving door of fresh seasonal items including apples, eggs, plants, organic meats, berries, squash, cider, baked goods, bread, honey, jams, tomatoes and much much more. This week I picked myself up a couple jars of preserves from Kathy Audia of Audia’s Farm in Howard County, MD. I’ve yet to tap into the Bumble-Berry, but the Persimmon-Peach was superb! Story continues after the jump with lots more photos. (more…)

Back in January I did a small post on Emma Mae’s Gallery by the Reeves Center on 14th Street because there was an awesome Thelonious Monk painting. So just recently I received an email from the owner, Rev. Sandra Butler-Truesdale. I stopped by this weekend to say hello in person and of course the gallery is as cool as ever, especially if you like jazz. Anyway, she mentioned that she had this photo and would love to identify all the personalities. Some are easy like Sonny and Cher and Sammy Davis Junior. But not all the folks are easily identifiable. I told the Rev. Truesdale that I’d be happy to post and see if the PoP and flickr communities could help. So if you know the others in the photo please leave their name in the comments but try and be as specific as possible ie second woman on the left.

Also starting tomorrow May 21st- Saturday, May 24 (12pm-8pm) the Gallery will be featuring ‘Anthony Phillips of Woodcrafts by O’Banion’.

But I don’t think we’ve ever discussed how cool their “bricks for schools” program is. You pay $150 to get your name on a brick and the money goes to building/maintaining desperately needed schools in various countries. So despite all it’s quirks this in and of itself is a great reason to patronize the bar. It’s a personal favorite of mine to hit before catching a show at the 9:30 club.

Now this would an appropriate use of dope sky as an adjective. I stumbled upon this church after wandering around the Crestwood neighborhood. This is a Russian Orthodox Cathedral located at 4001 17th Street, NW. It is pretty spectacular.

But a funny thing that happened to me as I was taking photos a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses approached me and asked if they could give me some literature. I said sure. Then they asked if this was where I went to church and I replied no, I go to the 9:30 club. One of the ladies looked at me quizzically and then pointed to the cover of the Awake! pamphlet she had handed me and said ok but ask yourself: Are we living in the last days? Man, that would suck walking around everyday thinking “we are living in the last days”. Shit, if we were living in the last days I’d head straight to the 9:30 club.

Well, sorry for that aside. Some more cool photos of the church after the jump including a pretty sweet door. (more…)

So I checked out the Crestwood yard sale this weekend and I, uh, was pretty surprised by this mannequin. I mean it’s a yard sale right? A bit much for a yard sale. Unless they were selling the mannequin, damn why didn’t I think to inquire? I guess she does look a little bit like Kim Cattrall… I’ll have to go back when I get my Vespa.
