Seemingly ordinary with a slightly modern flavor. But after the jump check out what the view from its front porch looks. (more…)

Have people noticed that the metro and buses have become more crowded since gasoline prices have skyrocketed? I ride the metro and it seems exactly the same to me? Has anyone noticed the metros getting more crowded? Or the bus?

Ed. note: I took that photo only a couple of weeks ago and it seems downright cheap now.

Located at 2311 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan, The Brass Knob, is another cool home furnishing shop. What differentiates this place from some of the others I’ve profiled is that this one focuses a bit more on antiques, particularly lighting. I spoke with owner Donetta George who told me that the Brass Knob has been open for 27 years! Apparently back in the day there were many antique shops in Adams Morgan. Another interesting fact I learned is that the Brass Knob was commissioned to do all the lighting at Temperance Hall (now Looking Glass Lounge). And you know how cool those lights are. Ms. George describes the store as primarily architectural antiques, lighting and hardware. So if you have an old school rowhouse and are looking to match one of the original door knobs this is definitely the store for you. And they also have some super cool stained glass. Check out more photos after the jump. (more…)

I’ve always been a big fan of the Hamsa so I was immediately drawn to this tattoo. The owner of this tattoo was awesome in a super carefree way. I asked if the tattoo had any special meaning and she replied: “I’ve always wanted a hamsa tattoo and I was in Thailand and got drunk and had a sketch of the hamsa so I decided to get it”.  So simple. I’m sure people will probably say, getting a tattoo while drunk in Thailand may not be the smartest move in the world but I still like it.  Although, those people may have a valid point…

I was really intrigued by this bumper sticker. Every now and then I hear some report that people are upset with the name Redskins but it tends to die down pretty quickly. I actually went to college at a school where we were called the Redskins and when I was a senior there was a vote on whether or not to change the name. Well, if I recall correctly, the students voted overwhelming to keep the name the Redskins. And the next year it was changed to the Redhawks. And nobody cares about the name change anymore. So if the name Redskins is insensitive, even to just a few, why won’t they change the name? History? Marketing? Is it not really offensive and people are being too PC? So do you think the name should be changed? Any guesses on why it hasn’t changed? Have any suggestions for a new name?

I thought this was a really interesting one as it is a condo in what looks like a more traditional home rather than a building. The location is 3423 Brown St, NW #201 zip code 20010. It is located between Meridian and Monroe just west of 16th Street. It is a one bedroom, one bathroom. The remarks from the flyer say: “Stylish 1BR in heart of Mt. Pleasant, oak floors, modern kitchen, updated bathroom, high ceilings, pet friendly, 7-10 minute walk to metro…” It also says there are photos online but I don’t see the web address so if someone finds it please post in the comments. The price is $305,000 and condo fees are $120 monthly. Sounds pretty sweet, yeah? So good deal or not?

This guy was fantastic. I know it is not a very lucrative gig but I wonder why we don’t see more street musicians around town? I think I’ve only maybe seen 5 or 6 in over ten years living in DC. Are there ordinances that forbid street musicians or is it another reason or am I blind and just haven’t spotted many?

This is on the corner of 17th and Kenyon. I ran into a landscape architect, Peter Chase, who decided to plant sunflowers around the base of the lamppost. I’ll have to go back in a month or so to see how it turns out. I think it’s cool that people take the initiative to beautify public spaces.
