Thanks to a reader for sending the link. The reader says: “This piece in today’s Post about Clark ES is about a Petworth school that’s closing, an excellent principal who Rhee, to her credit, is moving to Truesdell ES, which is being restructured. And it’s about a bittersweet ending of a school year. ”

I thought this paragraph from the piece was super sad: “Who will be my teachers?” one second-grader wrote. “I don’t want to go to another school because I love this school. If this school close I can’t go to my friend’s house. David and I can’t play about things we learn if my school is closed. I am going to miss Luis and Steven too.”

So what do folks think – are the closing of these schools sad but necessary or just sad? You can read the full story from the Post here.

I’m all for peace and happy hours so this seems like a great combination to me. But as I was looking at the flyer I saw that it says, “We will also be spinning music of peace, justice and love. Listen to songs by Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley and Tim Buckley.” I’m not sure who Tim Buckley is but when I listen to Nina Simone or more likely Jeff Buckley I tend to want to cry, phenomenal music for sure, but a bit on the sad side, no? Nevertheless, I do strongly believe that Jeff Buckley’s album Grace is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. So let’s all get drunk for peace, justice and love on Friday!

“First, I hear there is a program by which the District will give you a tree to plant, provided you agree to water and care for it, for two years. Do you know how to apply to this program?

Second, I caught part of a show on the radio in which I think the topic was city gardens, and how residents can rent plots to raise vegetables, etc. Is this true? What is the program?”

Anyone have some info on any of these programs?

“I just wanted to send a note your way about a new restaurant at 14th & Florida. I believe it’s called LZ Restaurant, and it’s a nice little locally-owned spot. There is no decor to speak of (we’re talking white walls), but the quality of the food and the hospitality of the owners more than makes up for that. They serve Middle Eastern food, and it’s DELICIOUS. The owners even gave us a free serving of one of their appetizers. It seems to be owned by a husband and wife who do everything there. It’s a hard spot to have a business (several others have failed in recent years), and I would love to see them succeed.”

I went to check out the new LZ Restaurant today but for some reason, oh yeah – I’m a jackass, I had already eaten. Nevertheless like the reader suggests this seems like it is going to be a super cool spot. It is very unassuming but of course it is the unassuming places that often have the best food. I briefly spoke with coowner Ms Mahgouba from Morocco. The store opened last week and is located at 1406 Florida Ave. and you can call ahead for pick up. It is a bit spartan on the inside but Ms Mahgouba was super nice. Prices seem very reasonable: appetizers from $1.25 – $5.00, Kabobs from $10.99 – $13.99, Shawarma and gyro sandwiches from $5.99 – $6.99, and Shawarma platters from $8.00 -$9.00 and yes they also have a vegetarian platter of hummus, tabouleh, grape leaves, spinach pie, cheese pie, falafel and pita bread for $9.00.   So I look forward to hearing more reports after you guys check it out. I’ll be sure to report back when I next visit…hungry. Photo of the inside after the jump. (more…)

Ed. note: I think it’s actually Savon Liquors but if you look at it from across the street quickly, like I did, with the spacing it looks like it says Save on Liquors but forgot the E. Ah, forget it.

The original notice says:

“There will be a meeting held on 4 June 2008 at 1125
Spring Road, NW (the Mental Health Center), at 7:30pm,
About the park at 11th and Monroe Streets, NW.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide a public forum
for all the residents, especially those from ANC 1A04 and
1A07, to address concerns or make suggestions about the
park. Residents of other Single Member Districts in ANC
1A are also invited to participate.”

Apparently folks are upset that residents from ANC 1A04 and 07 are given a greater stake in the issue presumably because they live closer to the park.

I thought this was an interesting follow up comment from the listserv:

“The park is a community asset and there are many citizen interests in
the park – to use it for recreation, to use it for relaxation, to use it
to escape the heat, to walk by and not be harassed, to have a good night sleep because no one is in it drinking, to no smell urine/excrement when you walk in an alley, to feel safe and secure in your home/street because it is free of crime, to watch you property value rise because you have an attractive green space nearby.”

Personally, I think those that live right near the park do have a greater stake but obviously those in the general area would like the atmosphere of this park improved. What do you think – does proximity to the park give one a greater stake?

There is one section of that apartment building on Quincy and New Hampshire that has the dopest garden every year.
