Anyone like this name? Are they trying too hard to sound like a New York neighborhood? It’s growing on me. I don’t think there will ever be a neighborhood name as cool as Petworth but this seems to be a good effort.

Thanks to a reader for telling me that one of the final spots below the Union Row Condos on 14th Street has been filled. You can see from the permit in the photo above it’s going to be a CVS. Not many people get too excited about CVS but there really isn’t another good option on 14th Street and W except for the Right Aid at 13th and U. So for those that live in that area how do you feel about a CVS coming?
The reader was also kind of enough to send the ANC1B Meeting notes which gives an update on the other retail going below the Union Row Condos. The new restaurant Eatonville is discussed with this interesting tidbit emerging: “The restaurant will have spoken word, folklore, and storytelling as well as background music and art from both local and global artisans.” The YES! Organic market is also discussed with hopes that will open it’s 14th Street location by August and it seems this location will be granted a liquor license. Ed. note: Let’s hope the Petworth location has similar success getting a liquor license. Excerpt of meeting notes after the jump. (more…)

I’ve often wondered how people choose their condos. It seems like there are two clear options. One are in the big new buildings and the other option is to purchase one in a converted rowhouse. So for those who have purchased condos how did you make the decision? What are the pros and cons?
Speaking of cons a reader wrote in to suggest I put the topic of condo boards/associations out there. I am intrigued by these condo boards. Specifically the reader would like to know how do people handle unruly members? How are differences solved without any bad blood with people who you have to live with and probably see frequently? What are some complicated matters that have been resolved through compromise? It seems like a very interesting world of politics and alliances and unfortunately sometimes brutal frustrations. Are condo boards easier to work with in the big buildings?

you have to write that your house is occupied on your mailbox.

Awesome. Did you know that you could grow a peach tree in the front yard of your rowhouse in DC? Too cool. What conditions do you need to have a peach tree grow successfully? Are there other fruit trees that can survive and prosper in DC’s climate?

This seems to be making a little extra unnecessary work for oneself, yeah? I guess the idea is so that the recycle can doesn’t wind up half way down the alley but it seems like it’d be a pain in the ass to lift that thing when it’s full and all. Just seemed a bit odd to me. I bet you that is one wicked clean house on the inside though…

Another wild variety. These seem to be quite popular. And I can see why, they are dope sky for sure.
A reader suggested creating: “a forum for trading/selling/bartering items in the neighborhood. Similar to craigslist but just local. Craigslist is great until you see you have to drive to say Leesburg to get something that might end up costing less at the store with the rising gas prices.” I thought it was a great idea and added it to the Forum section. By the by if you ever have trouble with the Forum just email me directly and I’ll make sure you can access it. Unfortunately you have to register separately to use the forum in order to keep out spammers. Following are some new topics from the new section:

This is the new ATF building, I think, over in North East. I think it’s the ATF building but it’s for sure a federal building. Anyway, when I was over at Artomatic I got to see the roof of the security barrier which is filled with green. So I understand the benefit of green roofs on buildings but what’s the benefit on a smaller structure like the security barrier? Is it more than aesthetic?

This one also has a nice spiral staircase which looks like it leads to a nice deck area. Could probably use some plants – I bet you could grow some great tomato plants up there with all that sun exposure. I also like the nice glass enclosed space on the first floor. Surely a great morning cup of coffee spot for the colder months.
