“The Fed and Caracara will be playing at Adams Mill this Thursday. I’m the singer/songwriter for Caracara and would love it if you guys would put something up on your calendar or even send someone out to see the show. It’s free and we can guarantee a hell of a rock and roll show. Here’s our myspace if you want to check it out: www.myspace.com/caracarainflight and I’ve included a flyer if you’re so inclined to post it. Thank you kindly for helping out some local bands!”

It’s guaranteed and it is a pretty sweet flyer…

I know this is outside of my normal stomping grounds but this is one of my all time favorites in the city. It is located near the National Cathedral. I think it is ridiculously cool. But I had a girlfriend who used to say she imagined hobbits lived inside…

I’ve seen Scooters locked up before but never a motorcycle. I know there are a number of motorcyclist readers out there so what’s the story here?

“Her name is Izzy. She’s a Scottish fold, which is why her ears are folded down like that. She lives in Logan Circle.”

Last chance to vote for finalists. I’m going to pick 5 finalists tomorrow which is going to be a nearly impossible task…

More entries after the jump. (more…)

I thought this was the most unusual summer I’d ever experienced. We had a couple of weeks of pleasant weather and I wasn’t getting devoured by mosquitos. But it seems I celebrated a bit early. So this truck seemed really odd to me. It can’t be possible to remove mosquitos from only your yard, right? I mean would the mosquitos from next door respect that boundary? What are your mosquito solutions? Deet? Vitamin B-12? What other options are there?

“I just noticed you finally saw the new mural on Irving! The artists are from the Latin American Youth Center’s Art and Media House (located 3035 15th St NW). On Wednesday, August 20th, they are celebrating the grand opening for a new installation called “Dos Caras Del Cambio/Two Faces of Change.” The installation will run from August 20th til October 10th. The grand opening reception is from 3pm-5pm.”

I’m happy to introduce a new contributor to PoP, hipchickindc.

A few days ago someone mentioned the original Petworth in a comment. I thought it might be fun to take a little virtual tour of Ye Olde Petworth, the one that exists, and has existed for a really long time, back in West Sussex, England. Before I go on, I apologize for the quality of the pics. These are vintage 80’s, mostly taken in the rain, with a film camera that I didn’t know how to use so well.

I actually came across the English Petworth before I ever knew about the DC Petworth, so when I first discovered DC Petworth, it was somewhat of a novelty. My parents have family friends that live in Petworth, England, and I went to visit them when I was traveling in 1986.

Petworth is both the name of a grand manor house (think Merchant and Ivory films), as well the small village that surrounds it. The original manor house and town were built in the 13th century. As one who particularly appreciates the history and hundred year old architecture of DC, the concept of buildings so many times older is staggering.
