Back in May, I had asked if anyone had been to the secret bar with no sign located at 2013 14th Street. Turns out a number of people had. Well, the Lounge is still open and their is now a sign plus they have a renovated downstairs grill area. Looks pretty good. You can find more info on their Web site. Anyone check it out since its reopened? Thumbs up or down?

Prices seem pretty reasonable.

From a reader:

“I’m an investor and general contractor. I ended up buying the house at 5620 8th St NW, and it turned out great. It was half done- another investor had started, done some terrible work, and then lost it in foreclosure to the bank. When we finished the rehab, it went under contract in less than a week and it settled at $475,000 a few months ago, which was a great deal for the buyer, but still profitable for us.”

If you are interested in checking out some of his other projects:

“Here are some other of my projects- http://gormanpropertygroup.blogspot.com. I have a big 4 unit condo conversion I’m starting next week at 6th and M St NW- it should be a really fun historical rehab.”

If you have any renovation photos send them to [email protected] Check some before photos after the jump. (more…)

Well, I’m not too familiar with short sales but these seem like decent prices for such a great location. Unit #103 is going for $219,000 and Unit #104 is going for $185,000. I’m surprised two very similar units have such a discrepancy in asking price. Think the prices are reasonable?

I recently “discovered” Transformer Gallery located at 1404 P Street, NW and was fortunate enough to be invited to an opening of their new exhibit. From their Web site:

Nilay Lawson

If You Didn’t Know What This Was,
Would You Know What This Is?

November 1 – December 6, 2008

Continuing our commitment to highlight the work of exceptional DC-based emerging artists, Transformer’s 6th Annual DC Artist Solo Exhibition presents the work of Nilay Lawson in her first solo exhibition.

Questioning whether or not her artistic endeavors only truly exist in the conceptual form, when a project can actually be considered “finished”, and if the objects she creates are merely remainders of larger artistic production – Nilay’s painting, drawings, and mixed media installations featured in If You Didn’t Know What This Was, Would You Know What This Is? document her obsessive consideration of objects and belongings used, consumed, and often discarded. Nilay stages artistic interventions throughout Transformer’s project space to explore the seemingly banal issues of daily life and their broader implications on her art-making processes. About this exhibition, Nilay states, “It compiles many endeavors I have approached to date as an artist. I’m releasing the evidence of my art experiences.”

Artist Talk: November 8, 2008, 2pm

EXHIBITION HOURS: Wednesday – Saturday, 1–7 pm & by appointment

It’s a small space but the space is used very well to exhibit Ms. Lawson’s work. It’s definitely worth checking out this unique exhibit. I particularly liked that her work is “continually influenced by the people she encounters, and the physical components of the city itself.” Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

“I’m suggesting this as a question of the day for your blog…

It’s the time of year when we Feds get to make our charitable donations through the Combined Federal Campaign. I always want to include a couple of local organizations but I never really know which ones are most worthwhile. Maybe you could ask your readers which DC neighborhood charities they contribute to, and which (if any) they tend to avoid?”

This is a good question. Back in February, I unsuccessfully tried to match funds for a local charity. Here were the finalists. Well only one person donated and a number of folks told me that the winner, First Time Computers, was completely unresponsive. So let’s try this again. Anyone have a favorite local charity or know of ones that should be avoided?

I’ve noticed that the pawn shops on 14th Street have extraordinary number of musical instruments for sale. A bit odd, yeah? Any theories? Who shops at pawn shops anyway? Sadly, I didn’t see any recorders. That was the only instrument that I was mildly proficient at. My masterpiece was “three blind mice”. It is a bit sad to think of all these musicians pawing their saxophones…
