It’s nice to see a bit of color from time to time.

It’s nice to see a bit of color from time to time.

I thought this was an interesting site. Many of the houses have the same layout but one house decided to move it’s front door from the front level to the bottom level. What’s the advantage in that? Here’s what the neighbor’s looks like:

“I’ve just learned Yes Organic has scheduled a private opening ceremony Monday, November 17th from 3PM.
In addition, CVS is also scheduled to open Monday at 8AM.”

I’ve never seen home with a roof quite like this. I think it looks awesome. I was so glad to see the sign saying it was part of a campaign to “save America’s treasures”. Cool to know that it’s got some history behind it as well being the former home of Mary Church Terrell – the first African American female school board member in America and Robert Terrell – the first African American municipal judge in DC.

So what do you think, do you dig the home?

Can anyone verify this? From the comments:
“At a community/police meeting last night at 15th and R, it came to light that Councilman Jack Evans (who was in attendance) had his car stolen over the weekend. It has been recovered by the police. No one is immune…..”

Well, it’s no secret that I love photography so I’m super excited about all the FotoWeek activities.
I received the following email from the folks at Ten Miles Square. It sounds amazing. Be sure to take advantage of it!
PixTour brings art to the people who are out and about. Take a walk, have a drink and a meal, and see the art of photography in Dupont, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, 14th Street, Anacostia and More. PixTour is an informal showing of photography on local walls and windows.
PixTour, a project of FotoWeek DC 2008, is showing the work of area photographers at 40 bars, clubs, restaurants, theaters, and shops around DC. The project was organized by Molly Ruppert and the Warehouse, with many photographers suggested by Ten Miles Square.
You can find Ten Miles Square curated shows at the following venues:
Big Bear Cafe — Cesar Lujan
Wonderland — Pat Padua
Red Rocks Pizza — Marie Kwak
Sticky Fingers — Parikha Solanki Mehta
DC9 — Jack Whitsitt and Paivi Solonan
Velvet Lounge — Angela Kleis
Nellie’s — James Calder
Warehouse is also featuring more PixTour at their gallery (with one photo from each photographer who volunteered for the project), along with an exhibit by Byron Peck, famed Washington muralist, with a reception on Friday, November 21, 6 to 10 p.m.
After the jump check out some photos sent to me of Room 11 located at 11th and Lamont. (more…)

This home is located at 2033 13th Street, NW.
The flier says:
“Great opportunity for the savvy investor to reap the benefits of a tenant in place. Beautifully renovated 3 level brick row with all the bells and whistles. Main house 3 BR, 2/12 baths , open floor plan, cooks kitchen, breakfast area leading to a deck. Lower level unit is extremely high end featuring double vanity, jacuzzi tub, sept. shower. Lower level is vacant. Current rent is $3,600 monthly.”
More info and a bit of a dizzying virtual tour found here.
I remarked on this house before because I find the brick to be very striking. I also think this is one of the best locations in the city. However, I am very skeptical that the current rent for the lower level is $3,600, that seems insane to me, right? Or am I just out of the loop? So this home is on the market for $1,175,000 – any chance it’ll go for that?

Meeting Report:
The meeting was well attended, an overflow actually, and I think the overall impression I have is that MPD is really doing the best they can with the hand they’ve been dealt. The vast majority of the meeting was discussion by MPD about the ongoing investigations. Interesting, and I’m glad their on the case, but to me that’s hardly the point.
It was asked of Lanier if she needed more resources, she said “no”, and proclaimed that MPD is patrolling the alleys and hotspots, we just aren’t seeing them. But I wonder how she would answer if you asked her privately rather than in front of Councilwoman Bowser.
Bowser didn’t have much to say, and cut the questioning short in deference to the ANC needing to cover other business. I think Bowser needs to make herself available at a meeting where the only topic will be public safety and getting guns off the street. This forum was not really conducive to getting any answers or asking any questions because of the SRO crowd and the lack of time. Maybe that’s what they want. Personally I would like to see Bowser and Fenty attend a meeting solely on the topic of what the city is going to do different (i.e. are they going to treat gun crime seriously or not?).
There was a some patronizing talk about how the people in the neighborhood need to be more involved and, from Lanier, a whole ridiculous spiel about how we need to take time to go down to every sentencing at superior court to make sure the judges do the right thing. Really? That’s the answer? If only we’d go to a few sentencing hearings that’d somehow convince young men that carrying guns is a bad idea?
That’s not the problem. The city council can make sure the judges do the right thing with one stroke of their pen. They, and they alone, can assure some minimum floor punishment for repeat dangerous offenders who keep getting caught with guns. If the city council would stand up for the citizens of this city instead of continuing to cow-tow to a small minority of radicals that think any punishment for crime is a form of racism, if the city would implement serious mandatory minimum penalties for repeat offenders, then we might get somewhere. Continues after the jump. (more…)
You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this week?

El Paraiso is located at 1916 14th St NW near T Street. I’ve also walked by this place dozens of times and it always seems to be crowded no matter what time of day. So I’m curious to know if there are any fans out there? Any specialties that are a must sample?
