Watching the Japanese Maples turn red.

I’m gonna miss the U Street farmers markets during winter…

I had remarked in the past that I thought the name Villaggio was a super fresh one. But I never realized how interesting the building itself was. What do you think thumbs up or down?
From the front:

This exhibit is really fantastic. I highly recommend you check it out (and it’s free). I hadn’t even heard of Sid Chafetz before stumbling into this exhibit. As always the pictures do more justice than I can write.

The exhibit goes until Jan. 31. Anyone check it out yet?

This home is located at 139 Varnum St, NW.
The flier says:
“What a deal!! Almost everything in this fully renovated home is BRAND NEW! HUGE corner unit w/ parking in rear! Renovations include new central HVAC, 1/2 BA & hrdwd floors added to main lvl, carpet on upper lvl, ceramic in all bthrms, nw cabinets, c-tops, appliances, all nw electrical wiring, plumbing, windows, roof, int & ext paint, lights (recessed in ktchen), vanities, ext doors & more.”
More info and photos found here.
The reader writes, “I hate the fact that it looks like they may have gutted all the original features that make Petworth rowhouses so great, but $330k for a renovated end unit rowhouse within a mile of the metro has to be a good deal, right?”.
I think there are some people in the community that may have a little more insight on this house than I do. Hopefully they’ll write in. But from what we know does $329,900 seem reasonable?

We’ve talked a number of times about Tryst but not too often about her sister restaurant Open City located at 2331 Calvert St NW. So is it as crowded as Tryst? How’s the food?
You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

Last year for Christmas my husband surprised me with a gift certificate for cooking classes at L’Academie de Cuisine http://www.lacademie.com/
The school offers both professional and recreational courses in two locations: Gaithersburg and Bethesda. I decided to sign up for a course in each location so I could compare. Both of the courses I picked were participation classes, 2 ½ hours long and cost $75 each (they also have demonstration classes if you just want to watch and eat).
My first class was a nighttime course in Gaithersburg – the drive from DC was less than fun, with lots of traffic. In this class we worked in groups of four — but luckily I got a decent group, where most of us were around the same skill level, and it was easy to make conversation with everyone. (There were a few young teens there with their parents, and I was happy to be among adults.) I enjoyed the class, got to ask a lot of questions, and I’ve used the recipes from the class several times. My big problem was that it was hard to hear the chef over the noise from the exhaust fans.
My second class was a daytime course Bethesda. The drive was easy, but they don’t have a parking lot. I found the setup at this location to be much better – the chef used a microphone so it was easy to hear her, and everyone cooked their own individual dish, therefore eliminating the problem of being stuck in a bad group. The chef had a no-nonsense style that I liked, and she was very approachable.
Both classes started with the chef demonstrating in front of the class (with one of those cool ceiling mirrors so you can see what’s going on), followed by everyone cooking. The staff, assistants, students, and chefs seemed to go out of their way to make sure you were enjoying yourself and learning. You could ask as many questions as you liked, and they were always looking to fetch any ingredient or tool you needed. Another thing I liked — you don’t have to clean up – it’s all taken care of for you. The classes ended with a meal of all the dishes we made, along with a glass or two of wine. You leave the class with the recipes — make sure and bring a pen to take notes — I learned some really great hints not included in the handouts.
The new schedule for winter courses will be posted on their website on today. They teach a ton of different subjects — and a gift certificate makes a great gift to any amateur chef in your life!

On Friday I told you about the MPD Inspector who requested your help to keep a juvenile robber behind bars.
The Washington Post reported on it Saturday. In the comments section of Friday’s post Herb says:
Nickles got more messages than he cared to count and said the orchestrated letter-writing campaign was inappropriate.
“I don’t mind getting 20 e-mails about a particular problem that reflects the unique perspective of people in the community, but I don’t approve of an organized campaign to send me 50 e-mails,” he said.
“I haven’t touched them,” he added. “I told my secretary to put them in a pile.”
Now I’ll be the first one to say that MPD has some flaws. But in this particular instance I support them 100%. I think we all need to support them in this case. They caught the perpetrator multiple times. Can’t really ask much more from MPD than that. So let’s make sure the the Council and AG hear us loud and clear. We will not tolerate the release of juvenile repeat offenders into our communities. Right? We have a lot of power in numbers. We must band together and support MPD.
Neener suggests we write the Council:

Let’s do whatever we can to help keep dangerous criminals off the street no matter what age they are. It is a very sad state of affairs when the police have to encourage the community to pressure the judicial system. But if that’s what it has come down to. Well, then hell, let’s freaking help. Let’s write and let our voices be heard. Let’s make sure Nickles ( [email protected]) has 5000 emails in his inbox if he’s going to be so cavalier about the situation. People have been asking for a long time what they can do to help the situation? Well, here is a concrete example of how you can help. You may also want to write about your concern for mandatory sentencing of those who use handguns in a crime. It does not matter what neighborhood or Ward you live in, the issue of street crime affects us all. Now let’s do what we, sadly, are compelled to do and we’ll find out if the pen truly is mightier than the sword.

I can’t stand when I see these ads by Chevron or other big oil companies that tout how environmentally friendly they really are. Allow me to call bullshit on this! Please. It’s like the tobacco companies saying they support cancer research…
