The first time I went into Solly’s I had a couple of beers and the bartender asked me if I’d like a glass of Power’s Irish Whiskey. At that moment I knew I had found a new bar to add to my favorites. Solly’s is also one of the few bars in town where there are zero pretensions. It is a true neighborhood bar. It resides in a very popular neighborhood at the corner of 11th and U. Last Friday I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Solly’s namesake – John “Solly” Solomon.

Solly, 39, can look quite intimidating at first glance but when you sit down and talk with him he could not be nicer. He grew up in Colorado but has lived in DC for 21 years. He moved to the U Street area 10 years ago and lives right around the corner from his tavern. It is amazing what we take for granted in this particular area – Solly remarked how monumental it was when the 7 Eleven opened up on U Street. When I walk by the 7 Eleven today I find it hard to believe that it hasn’t always been there.

Prior to opening up the bar Solly worked at the Old Dominion Brewing Company in Ashburn where he did almost everything “from brewing beer to being the general manager of the brew pub.” He was able to snag this great spot at 11th and U when the previous owner of U-Turn was looking to move back to Ethiopia. Solly was able to purchase the business which already had a tavern license. Solly describes his bar as “a neighborhood bar, a place where anyone would feel comfortable.” While there are tvs around the bar to watch sporting events there are intentionally only two downstairs so they don’t overwhelm conversation. From Christopher:

The PoP Book Club just finished its third book, ‘The Watchmen’ by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. This was a first for many of the readers, as not a lot of us had read graphic novels, but the overall opinion was that it was a good book. We started a rating system to help showcase the groups opinion, and we give ‘the Watchmen’ a solid 3 and 1/2 frogs out of a possible 5 (actually the consensus was more along the lines of 4 out of 5, but I just wanted to see PoP post half a frog, ok?) Also, we have tentative plans for dinner and a movie when the movie based on this book comes out in March next year, for anyone that wants to get in on the fun!

Our next read is a non-fiction work by Antony Wild titled ‘Coffee: A Dark History’. We will be meeting at the Red Derby on Monday, January 5th at 7:00pm to get the process going (and to get our drink/grub on), and then again at the Petworth Library on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00pm to really break into the discussion :)

The group is growing with every new book, so don’t be left out! Grab a cup of joe, a copy of ‘Coffee: A Dark History’, and join us next month!

“You might have seen the talk of the non-new 43 bus (http://connetiquette.blogspot.com/2008/12/metrobus-route-43-to.html). Looks like MtP isn’t the only one getting a changeup- Metro has posted the Dec. 28th route changes (http://www.wmata.com/bus/route_changes.cfm)- the 66/68 are becoming extinct. Instead, it looks like the 64 (i.e., Fort Totten – Petworth via New Hampshire) will be heading downtown via 11th St (current 66 route) and a new 63 bus (don’t know where it will begin) will do rush hour service along the current 68 (Sherman/13th); nothing outside of rush hour on Sherman. This is probably an improvement- it moves all of the non-rush hour service onto 11th, so there won’t be any guessing where the bus goes to, and gives direct downtown service through the middle of Petworth. I certainly like it- easier to take the bus home from Wonderland/Red Rocks/U St & not have to walk from the Metro station. Hopefully, they’ll get a real schedule (rather than semi-confusing blurb) over the next week.

Anybody going to mourn the loss of the 68? Given that GA & the 70’s are a long block over, it seemed redundant to have buses on GA, Sherman & 11th.”

And for those that missed it, guest poster Eric Nuzum had a great post on why it is more likely to witness unusual things happening on the bus.

Capitol Letters Writing Center Volunteer Appreciation Party and Info Session

This December, Capitol Letters is working with approximately 270 DC students in schools across the city. This would not be possible without our fantastic volunteers.  On Tuesday, December 16, we’re celebrating all the great work and energy they’ve contributed to our organization with a party at Wonderland Ballroom. There will be free cupcakes, holiday games (like re-writing Christmas carols), a competition for worst (in an awesome way) holiday sweater, and tunes all night by Columbia Heights’s own Gavin Holland.

Even if you haven’t volunteered with us yet, we’d love to meet you!  Come enjoy the festivities and find out how you can make a difference in 2009.  More info: www.capitolletters.org.”

Back in the summer I saw a similar one on 18th Street. It’s surely the same artist. (I was tipped off by the fact that they both say STER.) I just noticed that a commenter had seen this one back when I first posted. This one is from 14th Street just south of U. It’s a bit high up on the pole so you might not notice it unless you’re looking up. Of course I’m pretty short so it’s all relative I guess…

Believe it or not, it was the door knob that struck me the most on this door. It looks like it’s about 200 years old.

I’ll be honest – I just wanted to rile everyone up with a peach colored house. Otherwise it’s pretty fresh though…

A reader writes:

“Do you have picture updates for the other angles of Park Place above the Petworth Metro? I am very glad for the one angle you usually show, but would love to see others.. especially of the smaller scale part.”

Smaller scale part from the back:

Another reader writes:

“Perhaps I’ve missed it but would be Great if you had an insider’s update on the construction above the GA/Petworth Metro station…any new word on when it will be completed, which retail stores will fill it, will the condos be owned/rented, and whether any other restaurants/bars/etc might be opening nearby soon.”

Last Monday I broke the news that Gillian Clark formerly of Colorado Kitchen has signed a letter of intent to open up a restaurant in one of the spots. I also believe a Mocha Hut is slated to go into one of the spots. I believe the other spots will be filled by similar folks that are in the Highland Park building in Columbia Heights. If I was a betting man, and I am most definitely a betting man, I’d say we’ll probably get something like a Potbelly’s but that is pure speculation. I believe the project is supposed to be finished in 2009. I’ve recently heard some scuttlebutt that the project may be going back to condos but I have no confirmation on that. Will update as soon as I get more info.

More photos after the jump. (more…)
