Two years ago, I wondered if the shell on Upshur on New Hampshire would ever sell little did I know what a catastrophe it would become.

Well, I’m dying to here what you guys think about this one! There’s always been lots of controversy about upper 14th Street and which neighborhood it falls under. Just last week we were discussing whether or not the Red Derby was in Petworth or Columbia heights. Renaming neighborhoods or parts of neighborhoods has always been controversial. Case in point – North of Mass Ave or NOMA.
So here’s the scoop. Currently, there are discussions about renaming the area on 14th Street from Monroe north to Shepherd. The name will be – Tivoli North. Or Tivoli North Corridor. Personally, I think it’s a great name. I know that Columbia Heights technically goes as far north as Spring St. Road but I believe the area from Monroe Street on north has it’s own distinct flavor. So what do you think about the name Tivoli North – Thumbs up or down? Any alternative suggestions?

Holy cow, this is pretty sweet news! It will be located in the nearly completed Allegro apartments located at 3460 14th Street, NW. Many are probably familiar with Thai Tanic in Logan Circle, yeah? here are some pretty good Yelp reviews. Thanks to a reader for sharing the news:
“I had dinner at the Thai Tanic in Logan Circle this week. I asked our waitress about their future Columbia Heights location and she said the plan is for an April opening!!! Of course, this depends on how quickly the developer can wrap up construction at the Allegro, but good news to hear that our hood will be getting some yummy Thai food soon! it will likely have outdoor seating as I heard the space is already zoned to allow for that.”
Below is an awesome video sponsored by the Palace 5ive skate shop on 14th street. You can see the full video here. Thanks to a reader for sending:
“Some local boys put together a really cool online skate video featuring our lovely city. The opening montage has a lot of cool architectural details. And the skating’s not too bad either.”

A reader found this incredibly awesome album cover. Holy cow – this might be my favorite one yet. The reader writes:
“Here’s a vintage LP I found recently at a Goodwill. The music’s great!”
I can’t even imagine how good this music must be…

From a reader:
“Just thought you’d like to know, I happened to see someone posting a sign prohibiting dogs on the field at Raymond park (between 9th St. NW, Quincy St. NW, and Spring St. NW – the park a block away from the GA Ave/Petworth Station). This is a popular spot for off-leash play and it’s not uncommon to see people walking dogs there at various times of the day, so it gets a lot of use from the canine community. While I’m sympathetic to dog owners in the neighborhood (I use this park to walk my dog once in awhile as well), I guess we should also take into account the fact that there had been a sign stating that all dogs must be on a leash and owners must clean up after their dogs. The majority of owners seem to clean up after their dogs, but unfortunately the leash rule was often ignored. Hopefully the new dog parks planned for the area will fill the void, but in the meantime we dog owners should try to be exemplary citizens when it comes to dog walking etiquette in order to avoid more restrictions and to endear ourselves to our non-dog-owning neighbors and the rest of the community.”

So cool. Can’t believe I never spotted this one off 17th Street before.

While I’m not a big fan of the bow, my favorite part is actually the door knob:

An incredible corner rowhome but it’s really all about the third floor wrap around balcony:

Milkmachine are playing a show this Friday at the Velvet Lounge. There will be three bands with accordions, and an opening act of sword sallower and fire breathers. Certainly an eclectic night indeed. January 30, doors at 9pm, show at 10. see for details: http://www.velvetloungedc.com/
Chinese New Year (year of the ox) parade is Sunday in Chinatown at 2pm. A reader also writes:
Saw this on Chinatown in the Post:

it starts off saying that a five story high firecracker will be lit off this Sunday, and that made think it was perfect for PoP! For those non-superbowlers of course. The broader article is also interesting and discusses one drastically changing neighborhood.
Did you know Chinatown was originally along the mall, and its residents were forcibly relocated to make room for smithsonian and such?
