Feb. 4th, 2009. Mark it. This is the day Petworth started receiving the Northwest Current. My street all received copies on our doorsteps for the first time. Do you get the paper in Columbia Heights? Shaw/U Street? Mt. Pleasant/Adams Morgan? I’m wondering how far the new distribution goes.

I think this is great news and not just because of this. The newspaper doesn’t have a good online presence but consistently produces good articles. For example in today’s paper there are articles titled:

“City set to approve Upshur dog park”

“Foreclosure claims Babe’s project” (This is the one on Wisconsin Ave in Tenyltown that used to be the pool hall.)

“Apple wins ANC nod for Georgetown site”

and “U Street renovation wins green honor”.

Today is a good day.

I’ve shown this mural in various states of completion but now that it’s 100% completed and I keep receiving emails about it – here it is!

It is located on Georgia Ave. near Randolph I believe. It is pretty sweet.

I actually don’t like this door at all but man that is some cool stone border.

This one is really interesting for lots of reasons. It’s curious that there’s brownstone on the first floor, I dig the sweet bay window, and there’s some cool borders up top.

I just noticed the great clothing store, Caramel is hosting a pretty sweet photography exhibit. Sadly, we missed the opening reception but it’s still definitely worth stopping by to check out the photos. Caramel is located at 1603 U Street right across the street from Stetsons and Local 16.

The Space Between
A Selection of Photos by Sherry L. Brukbacher (www.brukbacher.com)
January 23rd – March 15th

The work in this exhibit represents Sherry’s desire to go beyond capturing a moment. She strives to do what photographers she admires have done – to somehow be alive inside the moment – to be at once voyeur and participant transporting the viewer into the space between lens and subject. For more than a decade Sherry has been pursuing photography professionally and as fine art. She studied at Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts and currently works for National Geographic Magazine.

As the Columbia Heights neighborhood persists as one of DC’s flourishing residential communities, we look forward to bringing you a unique new restaurant called Social, on the 14th Street Corridor. Situated on the southwest corner of 14th Street and Meridian Place, NW, Social will reside in a newly redeveloped property, once a rundown vacant building.

Part restaurant and part living room, it is the perfect neighborhood venue for any occasion. To create an unrushed and comfortable environment, Social does not take reservations and does not require you commit to your whole meal in one order. Shareable menu items are featured in three different sizes starting at eight dollars, allowing the guest to mix and match in any combination. The plates are as interesting as the beverage selection. We are confident that Social will be a welcome addition to Columbia Heights. Social will be open seven nights a week and Saturdays and Sundays for brunch.

Diners and critics alike will look forward to items like the Short Rib Sloppy “Joe” Sliders with Port Reduction or the Jumbo Shrimp with Cajun Cocktail Sauce. Brunch lovers will truly revel in the European style brunch offering and a “Bloody Mary” menu featuring international, versions of the traditional.

The décor is more reminiscent of a District residence than that of a formal restaurant. The residential feel of the “cellar” and “family room” featuring furnishings from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, is a refreshing change from the overly prevalent modern martini bar and white table cloth restaurant.

Partners AJ Guy, Scott Hammons and Tim Korzep have history with successful hospitality projects making their venture a likely combination. Their combined experience in operations and development includes Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, Houston’s Restaurants and the Ian Schrager Company providing the team with a wealth of hospitality knowledge.

We look forward to hosting you and yours!

Kind regards,

AJ, Scott and Tim”

More info and a sick virtual tour found here.

Wow, this house is pretty ridiculous. 7 fireplaces? Did you see the deck? Nice. And it can be yours for $2,395,000. But obviously for these house porn editions I’m more interested to know what you think of the house itself?

Well, you knew we’d eventually get to Komi located at 1509 17th Street, NW. You can see their menu on their Web site in a pdf version. I think it’s probably unanimous that the food is great. What I’m wondering is – is the food worth the price? And as always, how’s the atmosphere inside?
