This one has been converted into condos but the details are amazing. The only thing wrong is that they added this ridiculous sign on the super cool brownstone.

Otherwise very cool. A couple of close ups after the jump. (more…)

This section of 9th Street seems to have a bunch of new places going in. I should ask – does anyone know the difference between Ethiopean and Eritrean food? I’m guessing Eritrean has more seafood dishes? A few store fronts up from 2010 9th Street there is another spot that will be a restaurant according to the DCRA permit. I say the more options to hit before a concert at the 9:30 club the better!

This Carriage House is located at 3640 New Hampshire Avenue, NW (in the back):

The flier says:

“Welcome to The Woodrow, this carriage house is fantastic with two master suites, one with it’s own private balcony. A renovated Carriage house is one of DC’s rare gems and this one is quite a find. Inside you will be welcomed by a distinct balance of trational and contemporary design. This home was created for entertainers, whether cocktail or dinner parties, you and your guests are home.”

More info but sadly no photos found here.

So I went inside and you’ll have to trust me on this, the place is totally redone. In my humble opinion I think it looks really nice. It’s definitely a high end renovation. The flier also says ” 2 Master Suites, Roof Deck, Private Balcony, Fire Place, and Custom Granite Bar.”

I’m also a sucker for carriage houses… But this is on the market for $499,900. Sound reasonable assuming the inside is decked out (and trust me it is)? I’m thinking even though it’s really nice that price is a bit too high for a 2 bedroom.

Mar De Plata is located at 1410 14th St NW. There are some good reviews on Yelp which categorizes it as “Spanish, Tapas Bars, Basque”. As always, how’s the food and atmosphere? Any specialties?

To me, nothing says summer like rum. Maybe it’s the six trips to the Caribbean I’ve taken, but if I close my eyes and take a sip of rum punch, I swear I can imagine that I’m floating on my back in a pool. I usually wait until warmer weather to start up with the rum, but after our long winter, I felt like I needed a early-spring jolt.

The ingredients are pretty simple, and I’ve been known to make plenty of juice substitutions. Feel free to add some mango or papaya juice — the more tropical, the better. Also, you can add a splash of Malibu coconut rum, or even better, add a floater of Myer’s dark rum.

Make up a pitcher — cause one glass is never enough. I like these containers that seal up so you can give them a vigorous shake for a frothy drink. Continues after the jump. (more…)

A reader tipped me off to some graffiti on the back of the new Park Place apartment building. I went by last Friday around 4 pm. I take a series of photos and when I turn around there are two thugs probably around 16-17 years old. They are looking at me with eyes of pure hate. If you’ve seen those eyes before you know what I’m talking about. One of them, looking at me with very hard eyes, says “what you doing taking pictures of that?” I’m caught totally off guard. Even though the area is close to New Hampshire Ave., as I was in the back I was completely cut off from an escape route. Despite the fact that I was 126 pound all campus wrestling champion, Miami Ohio, 1996 in these situations my first instinct is always flight. That was not an option. So in my most casual manner I say, I just like taking photos of art around town. The thugs do not respond. So with my heart pounding I walk very quickly past them so that if necessary I could run. This is wrong on so many levels. I have no doubt that the two thugs were affiliated with one of the crews that tagged the building. But what is this? Are we living in the wild west where I have to fear for my safety at 4pm on a Friday afternoon simply for taking a few photos. Who owns the streets, regular citizens or the thugs? I know MPD has a lot on its plate with the shootings at 13th and Columbia but this behavior is also totally unacceptable. (more…)
