While our neighborhood is full of little, under-explored gems, I’d have to give my vote to the Lincoln Cottage as the best and least well known spot around. It is located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, just through the entrance at Upshur and Rock Creek Church.

I had visited the cottage back in September with some friends, but had my camera fail me that day, and this being my last day of unemployment, returned for some more photos and a chat with the visitor’s center staff. It is a worthwhile visit, both to better know the neighborhood, and as 2009 is the Lincoln Bicentennial, to better know a bit of this eminent president’s history. Recognizing that event, this sculpture and a new exhibition in the visitor’s center were added.

To escape the stifling heat of downtown, riverside D.C., and the pleading crowds that at the time were able to call upon the White House, Lincoln and his family spent the summers of 1862-1864 at the cottage. The home had been used for disabled and retired soldiers from 1852, until being made a summer cottage first for President Buchanan. Continues after the jump. (more…)

I’d like to make this a monthly event. I think the third Saturday or Sunday of every month for a two hour period. Obviously many neighborhoods are quite large so we’ll have to pick small sections and return for other sections. But I’d like the neighborhoods to rotate so that if folks participate in the clean up who live elsewhere their neighborhood will eventually be hit as well. I’ll select a “winner” on Sunday night.

I’ve always been a fan of El Torogoz located at the 4000 block of 9th Street (around the corner from Domku). Thanks to a reader for sending an announcement stating that El Torogoz is looking to add karaoke. Anyone think this is good idea? I think it could be awesome. I used to be a regular at a Korean karaoke place downtown, back in the day. I’m not sure if I’ve asked before, but where are your favorite spots for karaoke in the city? Full notice after the jump. You can see last week’s winner here. Your captions in the comment section, winner announced Friday. (Ed. note: I still have a few shirts I need to get to previous winners, sorry for the delay!)

Last May Cafe Collage, located on T Street just east of St. Ex, had reopened to mixed reviews. It is a great spot that seems would work well for a cafe. I spotted a new sign that says they are under new management with a new menu. Anyone check them out yet? Any fans of this spot at all?

“Dear PoP,

Every day I walk on Irving St NW, and at the cross section with Hiatt Street (in between 14th & 16th st) there is a fenced in area, almost always with a security guard, and a few trailers inside. There are people walking in and out at all times, and the place seems rather busy at night. Any clue what this is?”

A cop once told me that this is a (temporary?) homeless shelter. The trailers look like they might be for (temporary?) housing. I’m pretty sure this is what he was talking about. Can anyone confirm this or know specifically what the trailers are for?

A cab driver was taking me home the other night and said, “oh you live near the new stadium”. I was like what? He was talking about the top of the building that we’d discussed in the past. I never thought of it as stadium like before. But I guess I could see it a bit. What do you think – stadium like?
