I’m always curious to hear what you guys think of complete renovations. Does $445,000 sound reasonable?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. Anything good happen this week?

Funny how nobody bothered to mention their concerns about crime in this neighborhood in the original “Good Deal or Not” (GDoN) post. I think that may be a first.

I wish I could tell you who showed up and paid cash for this property, but it hasn’t hit the tax records yet and despite some ambitious googling, I was unable to find any relevant gossip.

My favorite tidbit on this one? Back in 1998, it was on the market for $375,000., went under contract within 3 days, and settled for $350,000. It was in bad shape, but some smarty pants builder fixed it up and sold it the following year for seven figures. Here’s the 1998 listing.

It is clear from a previous discussion that street harassment is a real problem in DC. For obvious reasons, I’m sure it becomes worse in the warmer months. While I definitely advocate self defense classes, I thought for street harassment the best thing to do was to simply walk away, or nod and walk away with your head held high. I guess I’m wondering if folks feel that a self defense class is useful for dealing with catcalls? The class below mentions “prevention”. Sadly, from the stories I’ve heard, it seems impossible to prevent harassment. For those who have dealt with street harassment, would you feel more comfortable dealing with the situation after taking a self defense class?

“Dear PoP,

Get ready for Spring: Dealing with street harassment

With Spring, unfortunately, comes a huge increase in street harassment. Get ready for Spring by expanding your skills for dealing with the “hey babys” that may come your way.

Can you “ignore” street harassment? Of course you can. And you already know how to do that. This class will give you other options, making ignoring it only one in a range of skills to choose from, especially when ignoring it doesn’t seem safe.

The class will cover the range of self defense skills–prevention and awareness, verbal self defense, and physical techniques-that you might need in dealing with street harassment. Most of these skills can also be transferred to other irritating or dangerous situations in the rest of life.

This is probably the coolest thing I could have ever imagined.

“Dear PoP,

I am writing to invite you and your readers to a unique theatrical event partially inspired by your blog. I work for Young Playwrights’ Theater and meet with young people often to write about the things that inspire and trouble them. This semester our after-school group, the Young Playwrights’ Workshop has been writing about the intersection of technology and theater. How will technology change in the future? How is it changing the present?

On March 2nd, 2009 I read your post New Apartments At Georgia Ave. and New Hampshire Gets Tagged And I Get Intimidated By Street Thugs and the resulting comments with great interest. It occurred to me that it could be a good topic for our group. All good drama needs conflict and there was plenty to be had in this discussion. Also, while the habits and character of young people in our community were discussed at length, there were not many youth voices in the discussion. Our young writers decided to respond. They created a piece called “Who Owns the Streets?” in which they deconstruct your article, the commenters and the meaning of community online.

“Who Owns the Streets?” will be presented this Monday, April 20th at 7:00 PM as part of New Writers Now: Theater of the Next Generation. Professional actors will present a staged reading of the piece and follow up with a community talkback. We invite you, your readers and the entire DC community to attend. You could even join us at 6:00 PM for a light reception before the show in the lobby of the GALA Theatre. The event is FREE and open to the public.

We hope that you and many of your readers might take us up on this invitation.

I’ve gotten a number of press releases about the immenent opening of the Allegro at 3460 14th Street N.W. It’s so nice to have this strip of 14th Street opened up again. And it looks like the building came out pretty good. I’ll be getting a sneak peak of the apartments inside so stay tuned for those photos. In the meantime, enjoy the open road! They reopened the bike lane:

And as we learned back in the beginning of February Thaitanic II will be opening up.

You can see all the entries here. There weren’t a ton of entries this week, yet this one of the hardest times I’ve had picking a winner. I have to go with Fellow Petworthian:

“Yo! Dem cherry blossoms got nothin’ on me! I roll on one-sevens, boyeeeeee!”

Runner up is Pennywise:

“Teach a man to steal a hubcaps, and he has a hubcap for a day. Teach a man to grow hubcaps, and you give him hubcaps forever.”
