I know we were lamenting the removal/destruction of the trees in the plaza at Park Road and 14th Street but it’s starting to look promising. I’m guessing the big hole is where the fountain is going to go. I can sort of visualize now. I think it’s going to be pretty dope.

I like these “border” gardens. Also, the owners explained to me the four reasons for the hay on the lawn. Can anyone name all four?

Sadly it is mostly blocked by a fence. But happily the fence and gates are pretty cool:

“Dear PoP,

Wanted to alert you to shooting on Monroe Street between 18 and 19th on Sat night. Five shots roughly fired. One kid, about 15, shot in the leg and taken away by ambulance. At least four police cars showed up and police with flashlights searched the street. As of 11.20, they found casings but no gun. We’re assuming this is drug related as we know there are at least several drug dealers on the street and we had some incidents involving shots fired last year that were related to drug dealing.”

Update from Council Member Jim Graham:

“Dear Friends: This has been a very tough weekend for violence in Ward 1. Now, last night at about 11 PM, a thirteen year old riding his bicycle was shot in the ankle in the 1800 block of Monroe, near 19th Street, in Mt. Pleasant.

I am told the boy did not live in the immediate area but may live elsewhere in Ward 1.

MPD tells me he will fully recover.

But now we have the allegation that there is a drug house operating at 1833 Monroe that has been reported to MPD. And further than the shots may have come from that vicinity.

This is all very troubling and of great concern. There are a number of unanswered questions, including any possible connection to the other violence this weekend.

I have waited all morning to try to get more information before posting this message. I have spoken to various MPD officials including Chief Lanier. They have assured me this is getting very high attention from MPD.”

“Dear PoP,

I’m surprised I didn’t see a post from you yet on what happened last night. (Although I know you don’t post on weekends regularly). I was walking home around midnight and there were 12-13 cop cars around the block of 14th street between Columbia and Irving. I walked up to a group of people that actually included Councilmember Graham. A cop explained what was going on, and when I asked someone what he said, I heard that someone was shot and killed.

This morning, I checked washingtonpost.com and found additional details.

“In Columbia Heights, a 19-year-old man was shot to death last night in the heart of the neighborhood’s developing retail and residential district, D.C. police said.

The area was brimming with people on a warm and pleasant night when the shooting occurred about 11 p.m. in the 3000 block of 14th Street NW, near the busy intersection of 14th Street and Columbia Road. The burst of as many as six shots sent people racing in all directions, some of them darting into traffic in their efforts to flee, according to witnesses.

Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) said he believed that the killing might have represented “gang retribution.”

The victim, who was not identified immediately, was hit in the head and fell in front of an apartment house doorway.”

And from Ontarioroader’s comment in Rant and/or Revels:

“Yep, a 19 y/o shot in the head and killed at 14th and columbia. There was also a gunfight in Adams morgan at kalorama and Champlain. 2 MPD officers shot and injured, but it sounds like they were able to return fire and kill the shooter.

there was also some jerk-off on a mini-bike firing off a 9mm at 12th and Decatur [maybe it was delafield] last night. MPD was out picking up casings and looking for a victim. Not sure if anyone was hit. Oh and a stolen car crashed, ejecting and killing the driver somewhere else in 4d. Good times… Good times.”

Wow, I think they did a great job on this one. I actually think the brick and the siding contrast works rather well. It is wild how they seem to fit together like a puzzle piece. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

“I’m raising money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and the WSC in Columbia Heights was nice enough to sponsor a spinning class with all proceeds going to LLS.”

“We have about 10 short films, free popcorn and happy hour. It starts at 2 and goes until 8pm.”

The flier says:

“Traditional floor plan with large, open kitchen and breakfast bar. LARGE, SECURE PKG space with overhead door. Sharply appointed kitchen with silestone counters and walk-in pantry. Warm hardwoods and exposed brick. Festive front patio and landscaped yard. Sky-lit stairwell and upstairs bath. 2 wood fireplaces. Separate laundry and storage. Less than 3 blocks to U street metro.”

More info and photos found here.

I think it’s no secret that I love this section of 13th Street. I had a chance to go into this home which was pretty sweet. It def. had the charm of an old house. My only complaint was that the bedrooms were def. on the small side. But I do like the exposed brick. So does $639,000 sound reasonable?
