Well, this is odd. There was tons of construction going on at the new 14th and Girard Park. Apparently there has been some chatter about it on the CH listserv. I ran into someone at the site who told me that the electrical, concrete, and bathrooms needed to fixed. As he said – I guess it’s better that they fix it and look a bit silly than not fix it all. And of course there’s been some controversy over renaming it Obama Park. Man, who knew such a little park could stir so much controversy…

Wayan writes:

“Not sure if you’ve seen this, but the eyesore at 9th and T is now under construction. About damn time! Its been vacant for years (I want to say a decade).”

This house has tons of potential. This is great news. I’m dying to know what it’s gonna look like. I’ll post updated photos as progress occurs.

I love the face on the front.

This is actually pretty funny – the owners of this house walked out right as I was taking the photo and we equally scared the crap outta each other. Usually I scare folks or folks scare me – this was the first time we both scared each other. But we had a good laugh about it…

This is a very cool house from Center Street, NW (east of 16th Street).

Folks had seemed pretty happy with Smart Bike DC when I asked back in November. But there has been some chatter on the Columbia Heights Listserv questioning the expansion:

“Does anyone know the status of the SmartBike program’s expansion? Back in March, they were saying that the program would grow from 10 stations to 50 by this summer, including a station that would be placed in Columbia Heights: http://wtop.com/?nid=30&sid=1628439

However, it doesn’t look like any new stations at all have been installed: https://www.smartbikedc.com/smartbike_locations.asp

Did I miss something? Was there a change in plans? What’s going on?”

Council Member Jim Graham responds:

“Thanks for including me on this. I understand DDOT had hoped to simply expand the existing bike sharing program. Unfortunately, the existing provider has not been that cooperative, so DDOT has been exploring the possibility of using a different bike sharing company. This is causing delays.

I am asking Jim Sebastian of DDOT to provide us with the latest estimate.

We are all very eager to see this successful program expanded.”

Wow, I wonder how difficult it will be to find a new provider?

Here is the information for our benefit show this Saturday at the Rock and Roll Hotel.  We are playing with Drop Electric and Funk Ark, two great bands from DC, and Hypernova from Iran who have been featured on NPR, Wired,  MTV.com, Billboard, New York Times, and many other places.  I am pasting the copy from our facebook page for the event below, and it has links for all the bands and a description.  Cover is $10.00 and all artist proceeds are going to Empower DC.  Empower DC is a nonprofit that works to boost community knowledge and literally empower low and moderate income residents to have a voice in how their cities and neighborhoods are run.  http://www.empowerdc.org

Finding Beauty in a Broken World: In the Spirit of Frida Kahlo
at the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery

1632 U Street, NW

www.smithfarm. com/gallery

A mixed media exhibition juried by F. Lennox Campello.

Exhibition Dates: July 1 – August 29

Opening Reception & Awards, Friday, July 17, 2009, 5:30 – 8:00PM

Frida Kahlo remains one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, but her spectacular life experiences, writing and views on life and art have also influenced many artists. Frida always painted herself: her pain, her anguish, her sorrow, her passion, as well as her triumph over disability. Her paintings and retablos celebrate a life constantly reinventing itself, in spite of the physical disability that strove to confine it. This exhibition will showcase the work of artists influenced not only by Frida’s art, but also by her biography, her thoughts, and her writings.

Lecture – Frida Kahlo: Her Art & Her Pain with F. Lennox Campello

Thursday | July 16 | 6:30-8:30PM | Free & open to the public

July is the anniversary month of Frida Kahlo’s birth and death. Frida always painted herself: her pain, her anguish, her sorrow, her passion, as well as her triumph over disability. Frida Kahlo’s paintings and retablos celebrate a life constantly reinventing itself, in spite of the physical disability that strove to confine it.

“This is Dallas, we have no clue what he is a mix of but he is a big boy at 85 lbs. He was found behind a hotdog stand in NC.”

“Here is a photograph of my cat Dexter wearing his favorite hat. He is quite the stylish fellow!”

Ed. Note: Seems there is a little confusion about the contest.  The cats are not competing against the dogs.  There will be 5 dog, cat and “other” finalists that will each compete in their own category.  We’ll have a poll in each category to select the winner.  Using the comments section for these posts will help me select the 5 finalists for each category.  I’ve gotten some amazing entries, and a lot of them!  So I’ll need your help selecting the finalists.  Maybe at the very end we’ll put the three winners in each category up for an overall winner.

I’ve received so many entries for this contest that I cannot individually reply to all the emails. Also, next week I have may have to post more than 2 entries a day per post.  But don’t worry your entry will be posted! The deadline for entries is August. 1st. Remember, please only send one photo per pet. You can see all the entries here.
