The Washington Business Journal broke the great news on Friday:

“The chef and restaurateur, who most recently worked as kitchen manager at Sticky Rice on H Street NE, is striking out on his own in the same neighborhood. He will open Toki Underground in a 950-square-foot space at 1234 (yeah, that’s not a typo) H St. NE, above popular neighborhood bar The Pug.”

This is phenomenal news. Noodle shops are a great inexpensive option for good grub. I can’t wait for them to open!

If you were out of town for Labor Day weekend, you may have missed this article (like I did). Thanks to a reader for sending. From the New York Times on Sept. 3rd:

“Washington’s fire department, which has not faced major layoffs, is dispatched along with Emergency Medical Services to almost all emergency calls in the belief that it can provide the quickest response. It gets more such calls per capita than just about any other fire department in the nation, and a disproportionate number come from poorer neighborhoods like Trinidad, where Engine 10 is based, in the Northeast section of the city.”

You can read the full article here.

Should firefighters be responding to medical calls?

“Dear PoP,

Do you have any details on this project mentioned below? I think we need to know what exactly Central Union Mission is planning. Building a shelter or more subsidized housing in Columbia Heights or Petworth is a step in the wrong direction. I think now is the time for some community action to make sure the thoughts of the community are heard.”

ANC1A Special Public Meeting
Wednesday, September 16th
7PM
Location: TBA

Agenda

Official Business
Official Business is limited to 5 minutes of presentation (unless extended by the commission) followed by questions from the commission and audience until a motion to close discussion is passed, followed by an official ANC vote.

ANC1A will consider the BZA Application for the Central Union Mission’s affordable housing project on Georgia Avenue.

Case Number : 17717
Case Name : Application of Central Union Mission
Case Summary : (Special Exceptions) pursuant to 11 DCMR § 3104.1, for a special exception to allow the construction of a mixed-use building with community-based residential facility and ground floor retail (totaling in excess of 12,000 sq. ft. of land area) pursuant to subsection 1329.2(b) (ZC Case No. 06-48), in the GA/C-3-A District at premises 3506-3512 Georgia Avenue, N.W. and 714 Newton Place, N.W. (Square 2895, Lots 825, 826, 830 and 831).
ANC : 1A08

Last we heard about this in April 2008 the Central Union Mission was not coming to Georgia Ave. At the time Council Member Graham wrote:

“We have re-defined the project to include real progress for lower Georgia Avenue. Instead of a 170-bed men’s shelter on the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue, there will now be mixed-income housing.”

So it seems that mixed-income housing would be a fine fit for that location. I had concerns with a 170-bed shelter but I have no problem with mixed-income housing. What do you guys think? Anyone have more specific plans?

This condo is located at 739 Newton Place, NW:

The flier says:

“”The Prasada” Beautiful 2br-2ba Condominium With Gourmet Kitchen, SS Appliances, Granite Counters, Pre-wired High Speed Internet, MBR Jacuzzi Tub, Washer/Dryer, Phone Entry System, Stylish Lighting, Gleaming Hardwood Floors And Much More. 3 BLOCKS TO PETWORTH METRO!”

You can find more info and photos here.

The photos look pretty nice. I’m not sure if I’d highlight a “phone entry system” though… But seriously what do you think of the condo itself? Does $329,000 sound reasonable for this 2 bed/2bath?

The Palm is located at 1225 19th Street, NW. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy the Palm restaurant up in NYC but never had the chance (money) to hit the DC location. I think the DC one is the original, right? Are these among the best steaks in town? You can see the dinner menu here.

One of my favorite things about living in Cleveland Park, back in the day, was going to the semi-annual CP Library Book Sale. I am delighted to announce that the Petworth Library will have its very own sale this Saturday. I hear there are “tons of good books” so I am eager to check it out. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up some of these great recommendations.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that the space at 2204 14th St., NW would become a bike rental spot. On Monday, I had the opportunity to speak with the owner, Stephen Harrell, who was able to fill in a number of details.

This location will actually be the first of three. He hopes to open the 14th Street location in the next week or two. The second DC location will be at 2033 P Street, NW. The third one will be located in Old Town, Alexandria. The P Street and Old Town locations should open in the next 2 months or so.

In addition to a rental spot the store will also service bicycles and sell them as well. On his Facebook page Harrell says:

“DC Bicycle Stations will provide high-line rentals, service and sales of accessories. Please stop by to rent one of many bicycles to enjoy the beautiful city of Washington, DC.

And by the way, if you need to have a romantic date we are able to cater a lunch bag and a blanket for you and your date.”

The second part of his message is pretty interesting. He explained to me that there will be a concierge service that can drop off and pick up rentals as well as provide other services upon request. Cost for the rentals is $65 per day and these bikes are rather high end retailing for around $1000.

Sounds pretty cool. The Bicycle Stations Web site is currently under construction.

I thought this was interesting. The sign was posted in someone’s front yard. Anyone think this is a good approach? I don’t know if I’d want all sorts of people just knocking on my door saying, yeah I’m a professional carpenter…

“Dear PoP,

I hope you can help me out. I live in Columbia Heights on Kenyon Street. I have been searching high and wide to find someone that can build me a garage door structure that would hold a garage door. I have attached a picture of someone in Petworth. You probably have seen these types of structures for they are littered in most alleys through out the city.

I can not find anyone that has built one and would love if you could post a link about this and let me know who to talk to.”

Anyone have a garage door like this? Any recommendations of who can build one?
