This beauty is getting renovated up in Crestwood. I really liked the contrast of the left side roof with the deep slope on the right side. Probably makes for some cool looking rooms inside. If it ever goes up for sale I’ll be sure to post.

Back in June Nichole wrote about the Hines Redevelopment Proposals for the 7th and Pennsylvania SE, redevelopment of the Hine Jr. High site. The Mayor issued a press release announcing Stanton-EastBanc as the winner. The press release says:
“Stanton-EastBanc’s proposal calls for about 510,000 square feet of total development at the site. It will include more than 200,000 square feet of office space – about 62,000 square feet set aside to move the nonprofit International Relief and Development and its 200 employees from Virginia to a new headquarters in the District. The project is also set to include about 150 apartments, 60,000 square feet of neighborhood-serving retail and restaurants, consolidation of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s operations and 150 parking spaces.
Stanton-EastBanc did not request any subsidy from the District for the project. The project could break ground as soon as 2011.”
Now for the Bad News:
Back in August we looked at the proposed development of the Giant and surrounding area on Wisconsin Ave by Newark St. City Desk reports:
“Work at the Friendship Shopping Center site will now be delayed – again. Sharon Robinson, a consultant to the project, said the appeal, while not unexpected, “is subject to a judicial process that will likely take two years or more to complete.” But Giant doesn’t have plans to back down; it “remains committed to the project.””
And sorry to end on this but it is worse news:
“A man was stabbed in front of an apartment building in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood Monday night, authorities say. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of Adams Mill Road NW.”
They say the man stabbed in the stomach is expected to survive and the assailant has not yet been caught.

I just noticed that the ADU-Genet Cafe & Hookah spot has opened up at 811 Florida Ave., NW. I actually thought the hookah fad was over but also noticed someone smoking a hookah pipe at the Shawarma King’s new outdoor seating, located at 1654 Columbia Rd, NW. The outdoor spot looks really nice especially on this section of Columbia Road.

How do you think the new bike station located right outside Union Station, turned out? I think it looks super cool? I know I’ll be called daft, obtuse and more but can someone please explain the purpose to me. Who will use this? Bikers from outside of DC who then will take the metro to work?
And of course do you like the structure itself?

This beautiful shot is from Bogotron, titled, “Bridal Party”. A bit more description says, “A bridal party breezes through the Arts on Foot event, Chinatown/Penn Quarter.” I really like how the word museum is framed in this photo. Nice shot!

This home is located at 1547 4th Street, NW:
The flier says:
“Spread out in this sun filled, spacious federal style townhome in the heart of Shaw! Luxury awaits you as you enter this renovated home to its original historic charm! Hardwoods, exposed brick, beamed cathedral ceilings and so much more!”
More info and photos found here.
I think this is a good looking house. Though, it’s interesting that it is three levels but only has 2 bedrooms. What do you think of the renovations/photos? Does $479,900 sound reasonable?

The Dubliner is located at 520 N Capitol St NW near Union Station. Filming the most recent PoPtrekker my partner in crime, Intangible Arts, was singing the praises of the Dubliner. I’m sad to say, I was fairly wrecked by the time we got there but I did enjoy my fried chicken salad. It has a great outdoor dining area and the inside had a classic pub feel.
You can see their menus here. Any big fans? For those that like it, do you prefer it more for the food or the bar?

Little Miss Whiskey’s is located at 1104 H Street, NE. I was sent a bit more info from the folks running the trivia:
“Come find out at the Inaugural Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar Pub Quiz this Tuesday September, 15th. Arrive early to grab your table, space is limited. First round starts 8:00pm sharp.
The festivities feature five rounds of ten questions. That’s right, fifty explorations into the joys of everything from pop culture to prehistory.
Quizmaster Steel & Saint DC are pub quiz troupers, now is your chance to get your brain tickled by the swamis.
Gear up for music rounds, picture rounds, prizes, and surprises from generous sponsors and the fine folks at Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar.”

“Dear PoP,
Cool weirdness plus public service announcement? Today my thermal coffee carafe exploded – as in gunshot loud, glass shooting up like a geyser all over the sink (and me.) The carafe was empty, room temperature for 6 hours, being rinsed in tepid water. Google search turned up a shocking number of similar explosions! I just never thought about exploding coffee pots before! Also, a tire gauge recently exploded during use, shooting the metal measurement slide thing out like a bullet. So it got me wondering, what else explodes that you really would never expect?”
That is insane. Reminds me of my first PoP breakfast tip from Jan. ’07. Never ever try to microwave an egg…

I’ve been getting a number of emails (and a tweet, see photo above) about this disgrace. Sadly, I suspected it was going to happen. This is from the great mosaic on Irving between 11th and 13th that was done by a group of students from the Latin American Youth Center. Hopefully the graffiti can be removed without too much damage to the mural.
One reader sums up the situation perfectly:
“Why must people be such assholes?!”
