Lala Tamar is what happens when Moroccan soul and Brazilian beats meet on the dance floor. A singer, dancer, and gimbri player, LALA (“lady” in darija) brings North African music a fresh, feminine alchemy—ancient songs infused with the spell of gnawa trance, her grandmother’s music resurrected from the Atlas Mountains. Internationally acclaimed, she is known on the streets of Marrakech, her videos have millions of views, and her jubilant sound has carried her to festivals and stages on six continents. Wherever she goes, hearts and feet leave happy.

Master kora player Yacouba Sissoko devotes his gift to spreading the word of peace and expanding awareness of West African history and culture. His performances transform traditional songs and stories inherited from his forefathers into messages of love, harmony, and empowerment. The kora itself—an enchanting 21-stringed instrument central to West African culture—has long been played by djelys, or storytellers, who performed for kings, nobility, and village chiefs. Through song, they preserved the oral histories of their people, recording the rhythms of social life, cultural identity, and family lineage. In Yacouba’s hands, the kora continues this lineage, transporting audiences with its resonant sound.

The craic continues! After our Pay What You Can tickets to this 65 minute play set in Northern Ireland sold out, we’re releasing a limited batch of $25 tickets.

Faye hasn’t slept in twenty days. She’s fine, though! She really is! After a home invasion, she is living off Rice Krispies and adrenaline and enlists her brother Naoise in an increasingly absurd attempt at exposure therapy. But Naoise has a hidden secret that’s about to surface. Lie Low is a dark comedy about trauma, the lies we tell ourselves, and the outrageous ways our brains work. Or don’t.

Since BVSPCA started to provide animal control services in January, DC no longer has 24/7 animal control to help residents and animals in need. Residents in crisis repeatedly report unanswered emergency calls, ignored voicemails, and outright refusal to pick up stray or injured animals.

This lack of responsiveness is putting animals and people at risk and forcing residents to do the work that BVSPCA is being paid nearly $10 million a year to perform.

Feeling cooped up — or dare we say, lying low — and tight on cash during the government shutdown? Solas Nua has you covered.

We’re all about presenting world-class Irish art in DC at accessible prices. That’s why we’ve included Pay What You Can opportunities to see LIE LOW, a dark comedy by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth, at Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St. NE), with tickets starting at $5.

The end of another fantastic season is just around the corner! Our last show was a testament to our resilience; despite the government shutdown that affected hundreds of thousands of workers, ArtRave, with its 18-year history, still produced a memorable event last Saturday. In fact, it was so well-attended that we had to extend our hours by an hour, staying open until 6 PM!

For this Saturday’s show on November 8th, we are excited to feature even more talented artisans. This includes a quilt maker, several fashion designers, two skilled gemstone artisans, and a variety of gourmet vendors, such as a honey maker, a coffee artisan, and two bakeries, among others. In short, we have all the ingredients for another phenomenal event!

Step into a night that breaks the routine: an evening where wine becomes celebration and the moment becomes memory.

Discover the story of Beaujolais Nouveau, the young, fresh, fruit-forward wine released each year to honor the harvest, transformed into a global sensation thanks to Georges Duboeuf. It may not be the most complex wine, but it is the most anticipated: the wine of celebration, joy, and tradition.
