I wanted to get involved in the Fight for $15 minimum wage campaign. I saw business lobbyists claiming it would hurt businesses. I thought that running an explicitly living-wage business as a living case study could be useful to the movement.


My shero Val is a registered nurse with a huge heart for broken cats. She founded a nonprofit to find homes for kitties that other rescues often won’t take.

In 2011 I got out of the rain in a Petco. They had rescue adoptions with a photo of Floyd, a handsome gray tabby missing a front leg. He had a tipped ear, and they initially thought he was too angry to adopt. However, Val believed in him.
