Howard Theatre Oral History Day

Saturday, December 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Howard Theatre Oral History Project, December 1, 2012 at the legendary Howard Theatre, Washington, DC featuring interviews with the legendary Dick Gregory, Sandra Bears of the Jewels and other Howard Theatre past performers and staff.

Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. (HTR) the nonprofit organization that supports the community issues regarding the Howard Theatre and that led the effort to restore the Howard Theatre will produce an event to launch the Howard Theatre Oral History Project. The Oral History Project is a long term initiative that will become a part of the exhibition to be installed at the soon to be built Howard Theatre Education and Cultural Center annexed to the Howard Theatre.

The Oral History Project will specifically document history of the Shaw/U Street neighborhood and Washington’s art and cultural community as it relates to the Howard Theatre. On Saturday December 1, 2012 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Historic Howard Theatre, HTR will record oral history interviews with performers, previous theatre staff and audience members who have had unique experiences at the Howard Theatre.

Hundreds of people will benefit from the experience of Oral History Day on December 1, while thousands will benefit by watching and listening to the produced history recordings that will be the result of this historic event. The public is welcome free of charge to join in viewing the recordings of history, to include interviews with the legendary Dick Gregory, musicians, Greg Gaskins (guitar player for Elvis Presley, The Manhattans and others), David Akers (trumpet player with Wilson Pickett), Sandra Bears of the Jewels, and other surprise guests.

See all of tonight’s and the week’s events here.  To add your event, click the events tab up top and then click “add an event”.  You can add concerts, museum/gallery exhibits, fundraisers, sporting events, bike rides etc. You can add anything you think will be of interest to PoPville.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
