Listed District’s Phenomenal Finds Vol. 8 – “Southern Fried Furniture”

Author and Mother

Ellen Richardson, a graphic designer and Pleasant Plains resident, recently took her Craigslist hunting skills to the next level with the launch of her blog, Listed District. Listed District offers daily DC Craigslist findings of everything from Mid-Century and Industrial furniture, to bikes and the utterly strange.  Every week Ellen is going to share a roundup of some Phenomenal Finds with PoPville.

Having grown up in Alabama, I am well versed in the art of outdoor lounging activities. My parents have owned the same white metal glider since before I was born – it still sits gracefully on their back patio, offering the best summertime view of Coneflowers and Black-Eyed Susans I’ve ever seen. I know DC folks love their spring and summer outdoor time too, and gliders aren’t just for Southerners, so today’s Listed District Phenomenal Finds serves up some Southern-style gliding goodness for your enjoyment.

When I see these classic relics of Americana, it warms my heart and brings to mind a few things from home: Old people. Sweet Tea. Old people drinking sweet tea. My parents (unrelated to previous ‘old people’ reference…). Hot, quiet, Alabama summer nights. The green, green grass of my Dad’s backyard. Hickory chips on the grill.

I could go on, but I won’t…instead, I’d like to plop down in one of these vintage metal gliders or chairs with my glass of sweet tea (preferably served in a ridiculously large plastic cup leftover from a circa 1994 Auburn football game…). Any one of these Craigslist options would make my DC rowhouse feel miles away from the sirens of Georgia Avenue, the construction of Sherman Avenue, and, most disturbingly, the psychotic wailings of my ill-behaved seven year old neighbor…

Missed out on these Craigslist options? Never fear! Check out Vintage Porch Gliders, a few colorful options on Etsy, CandyBouncer.com, and even Lowes (can you believe it?!). Are you lucky enough to already own one of these gems and are ready to refurbish? Here are some tips to get started (I know from experience that your best friend will be a sandblaster…).

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
