From the office of Council Chairman Phil Mendelson:
“The Attorney General for the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit challenging the proposed Monumental Arch at Memorial Circle on behalf of the District. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, who submitted a declaration in support of the case, issued the following statement:
“As a member of the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), I have a responsibility to carefully review proposed memorials and their effect on the nation’s capital.
“Congress established a process for approving memorials in Washington for good reason. What we commemorate, where we commemorate it, and how a memorial fits into Washington’s historic landscape are important decisions that deserve careful consideration.
“The proposed Arch has not gone through that process. The Commission has been asked to move forward without the information, consultation, and approvals required by law. That prevents me from fully carrying out my responsibilities as a Commission member.
“This is not about whether one likes or dislikes the Arch. It is about following the law and respecting the responsibilities Congress assigned to the Commission.”
The National Capital Planning Commission is scheduled to consider final site and building plans for the proposed Arch at its next meeting on Thursday, November 5, at 1:00 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually, and members of the public are expected to testify on the proposal.”
