From a press release:
“South Block, the Northern Virginia-born smoothie café, has signed a lease with EastBanc Inc. at 700 Pennsylvania Avenue SE in Eastern Market with plans to open in early 2027.
Founded in 2011, South Block has expanded throughout the region by pairing fresh food with its mission of making people feel awesome one block at a time. The Eastern Market location continues that mission, bringing the brand’s feel-good menu and community-focused experience to one of Washington, D.C.’s most iconic food markets.

“Opening in Eastern Market feels especially meaningful because Washington, D.C. has been home to South Block for the past 15 years. We started here with a simple mission to make people feel awesome, and we’re grateful to have become part of so many neighborhoods across the DMV,” said Amir Mostafavi, founder and CEO of South Block. “As a DMV native, it’s incredibly rewarding to continue growing in the community that helped shape me. We’re excited to bring our fresh smoothies and açaí bowls to the Eastern Market neighborhood while continuing our commitment to giving back. A portion of every purchase supports our nonprofit, Fruitful Planet, helping provide fresh fruits and vegetables to people in need throughout our communities.”
The new location will serve South Block’s lineup of made-to-order acai bowls, smoothies, juices, toasts and other fan favorites, all crafted with fresh fruit and organic, fair-trade acai. To celebrate the opening, South Block plans to host a block party featuring a live DJ, family-friendly activities and free acai bowls for the first 100 guests.
“We’re excited to welcome South Block to Eastern Market at 700 Penn,” said Philippe Lanier, CEO of EastBanc. “At EastBanc, we’re always looking to bring concepts that add something meaningful to the neighborhoods they serve. South Block’s commitment to quality and community makes it an ideal addition to Eastern Market, and we’re excited to see the brand become part of the neighborhood’s continued evolution.”
With a long-standing presence in Washington, D.C., EastBanc has played a central role in shaping the city’s retail landscape. Through a curated mix of local, national and international brands, EastBanc continues to strengthen neighborhood retail corridors while preserving the character and authenticity that make each destination unique.
South Block now has dozens of locations across Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. The Eastern Market location will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.”
