“Dear PoPville,

On Saturday, April 12th around 6:45pm, I jumped on an electric CaBi in Bloomingdale to try to make it downtown for an event at 7pm. It started to lightly rain, no surprise for the spring weather we’ve been having. In a split second, I decided to dock the bike at the R & 8th Shaw-Howard metro station and take the Green line the rest of the way.

As I was struggling to properly dock the heavy e-bike and running late,

you approached me and said something along the lines of “Wow, just my luck” and with a widening grin, “I was going to say if you wouldn’t mind me just taking it, before you docked the bike…” I cocked an eyebrow, catching onto the joke, “Oh, and I pay for your ride?” The grin deepened and my heart flip-flopped more than I’d like to admit. “Yeah, exactly!”

I stammered on for a little because my mind went blank but I wanted to have a reason to linger. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but it seemed you did too. I quickly remembered my hurry and turned toward the metro escalator, but not before you called out “I like your—” Over the rush in my head, I couldn’t make out exactly what you were complimenting me on, but replied “thanks!” with a smile before wishing you a good evening.

I made it to the event on time but wished I hadn’t. I replayed the moment a thousand times with me asking for your number before I dashed away. But unfortunately, I left you with an e-bike instead of a slipper.

If you’re still interested in a free CapBi e-bike, I have one with your name on it. Get back to me soon, though, it’s charging me by the minute.”
