Friends of the White Whale Society Presents – In Recovery Thanks to a Good Samaritan and DC City Wildlife

Thanks to Lydia and all others who passed on from DC City Wildlife:

“We have been anxiously waiting to introduce you all to our current albino squirrel patient! 🤍 For a while, we weren’t sure if she would make it.

One month ago yesterday, this beautiful squirrel was brought in by a kind human who saw that she was injured.

When we opened the box that she was in, we were hit with the unmistakeable stench of infection and decay. 🤢

She had multiple severe soft tissue injuries, especially to her left arm, left armpit, and right ear. Based on the extent of infection and tissue death, these injuries had to be several days old. Compromised by these injuries, she had also acquired a heavy burden of fleas.

We suspect she was grabbed by a predator. An unfortunate consequence of her beautiful white coat is a lack of camouflage. 🌳

But out of any time to get injured like this, winter might be the best! With relatively few patients in care over the winter, we have the capacity to provide the extensive care that this little lady requires, including routine sedated wound care, bandage changes, and surgery. 🩺

We are extremely pleased with her progress thus far. But she still has a long road ahead to fully heal these wounds. We also need to keep a close eye on her left leg’s range of motion, as extensive injuries can sometimes restrict movement.”
