My friends and I were at Chicken and Whiskey on U Street for their Halloween pop-up on Oct. 26, Saturday night. In comes a person with friends, and she’s wearing a very striking Princess Irulan costume. If you aren’t familiar, she’s a character from the Dune books, and was portrayed by Florence Pugh in the recent Dune 2.
In that movie, Pugh wore a medieval-style chainmail helm with a metallic, jewelry-like veil. This person was wearing that as her costume. I was intrigued and asked her at the bar if she was dressed as that character. She got excited and said “Yes! You’re the first person to guess that tonight!” She’s a fan of Dune, and she made the piece from items she bought online, as she likes craftwork. I told her that was so smart.
We had a brief chat about our costumes and what inspired them before she rejoined her friends, saying it was nice meeting me. I didn’t think of getting her a drink or her number, but I liked that she picked a deep cut she worked hard on, and even with her face partially obscured I could see she had a really cute smile.
I returned to my friends and they had actually been observing me. “Did you get her number??” “Did you buy her a drink??” Ah man, should I have? I didn’t want it to be awkward. I myself love craftwork and sci-fi, but it was a loud party setting and she was dancing with friends. I thought of how to re-engage conversation with her, but she and her friends left before I got a chance.
Your costume was awesome, and I’d love to hear if you’re excited for more Bene Gesserit on Dune: Prophecy. Lisan Al-Gaib!”
