“Award-winning Chef Pepe Moncayo is set to unveil his latest culinary venture, “Arrels,” at Arlo Washington DC this Fall.”

From a press release:

“Chef Pepe Moncayo, renowned for his innovative approach to Spanish cuisine, is set to unveil his latest concept, “Arrels,” at Arlo Washington DC (333 G Street, NW) later this Fall. Chef Moncayo brings his expertise and passion to this new venture, promising a unique culinary experience deeply rooted in his heritage.

Chef Pepe Moncayo, born in Barcelona, has an impressive background working with Spain’s revered Michelin-starred chefs. His journey took him to Singapore, where he opened Santi in Marina Bay Sands, followed by two more successful establishments. In February 2020, Moncayo and his team opened Cranes in Washington, DC, which quickly gained acclaim from Washingtonians and travelers alike. With Arrels, Moncayo continues his mission to bring exceptional dining experiences to new heights.

Arrels, meaning “roots’ in Catalan, is Chef Moncayo’s homage to his heritage. This modern Spanish restaurant, deeply connected to its origins, celebrates the ties to Barcelona, the small mountain village of Sant Celoni, the fishing ports of Blanes, childhood summers in Andalucia, and travels across Spain, including the Basque Country, Galicia, and Mallorca. Arrels embodies refined technique in a warm and inviting atmosphere, offering guests a contemporary taste of Spain through Pepe’s unique perspective. The menu features a modern take on classic staples, with dishes ranging from rustic to indulgent. Classic tapas, composed plates, signature sangria, and gin and tonics, all rooted in Spanish tradition, transport diners to the heart of Spain.

The centerpiece of this kitchen will be a state-of-the-art Spanish oven and grill, fueled exclusively by charcoal. Here, Chef Moncayo will prepare a variety of dishes, from succulent whole fishes and flavorful rices to perfectly charred vegetables. Charcoal, a cornerstone of Spanish cooking, enhances natural flavors and adds a unique depth to every dish. At Arrels, we celebrate this age-old tradition, bringing the authentic taste of Spain to guests in every bite.

Arrels is Chef Moncayo’s thank you letter to Washington, D.C. “I wish to share my own perspective of Spanish culinary arts with the city that welcomed me, has given me so much over the past six years, and I now call home,” he says. ‘It reflects my roots and the early years of my culinary journey that have shaped me. My team and I aim to create an inviting space where guests can savor this essence of Spanish cuisine.”
