“Need Advice: How long does it take for DC to issue a new birth certificate?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping I can poll the community for some valuable advice. I gave birth to my third child last fall, my first in the District. She’s now four months old, and the city has yet to provide me with her birth certificate or forwarded the information to SSA.

My midwife’s team have reached out to vital records numerous times and they haven’t provided any answers. In the meantime, I have no ability to apply my baby for a passport and no SSN to provide on my taxes or her bank account. Since she’s my third, I’m aware that this is completely abnormal and downright negligent of the city. Both of my other kids were born in different states, and I had all documentation within two weeks of their respective births. What gives? Is this normal here, and how have other parents dealt with it? We’re moving soon, and I’m terrified of leaving without any official documentation of her birth.

Thanks in advance from a stressed out new parent!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
