Be a Better ‘We’ in ‘23, Be a Mentor or Tutor!

It’s a new year! Maybe you are looking to build stronger ties to our D.C. community. Maybe you are looking to feel better about the kind of person you are. Maybe you want to connect with people you might not normally interact with.

Tutoring and mentoring a young person checks all these boxes. Two-thirds of children and teens in D.C. need a little extra support from an extra caring adult in their lives. By becoming a volunteer tutor or mentor — just an hour or two a week — you can build a stronger D.C., one relationship at a time. And with thousands of students  grappling with pandemic learning loss, your time can make a difference in academic outcomes, too.

“That sounds great,” you might be thinking to yourself. “But where do I start?”

Join the virtual Mentor Recruitment Fair Thursday, January 19 at 6 p.m., co-hosted by the DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative and MENTOR Maryland | DC.

Attendees will listen to brief presentations from a dozen programs serving neighborhoods throughout the city, then choose breakout rooms with program(s) that they like. It’s a great opportunity to find a great program that also fits your schedule, location, preferred age group, and interest areas.

Participating programs include: Becoming a Man (BAM), Best Kids, Black Swan Academy, Collegiate Directions, Communities of Hope, For Love of Children (FLOC), Kid Power, Reading Partners, Spark the Journey, Latinas Leading Tomorrow, and Student-Athletes Organized to Understand Leadership (SOUL).

Join the fair and be a better “we” in ’23!

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
