“Beware thefts at DC pools”

“Dear PoPville,

On Thursday 6/16, I headed to Brookland to swim with a dear friend at Turkey Thicket Pool. After completing an awesome hour-long swim workout, I discovered that my pool locker with a combination-number lock was broken into (they cut the lock) and all my personal belongings stolen, including my driver’s license, credit card, house keys, and most importantly a hearing aid that I need in order to hear since I’m deaf.

If anyone finds a bright green knapsack lying in the street with my driver’s license, house keys, and the hearing aid (which is inside a Rubbermaid container), please alert me here in the comments or call 301-924-4278. Thank you (big-time)!

P.S. This is first time I’ve suffered a theft in DC after ten years living here since I’m very careful with my belongings, particularly my hearing aid. Kinda surprising to experience such theft at the pool especially at this wonderful family-friendly pool in Brookland. Lesson learned – can’t even trust a locked locker to safeguard my personal belongings.

Fortunately I had my phone with me on the pool deck and my shoes weren’t taken. So I was able to walk home in my Speedo after calling the police to the pool and filing a theft report and canceling my credit card.

The kind female staffer who assisted me mentioned that thefts at the pool have shot up recently and it was best to avoid the locker room and bring your swim bag onto the pool deck. Would’ve been nice if the pool staff had warned me and other swimmers in the first place. Oh well.

It seems like crime has gotten really bad around the city the past year so good luck to anyone who swims & locks up their belongings at this pool and other DC pools where similar thefts have been reported as well (Rumsey, Wilson, Takoma, etc)!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
