Wages, Benefits, Safety… If Well-Paid Maids Can Do It, Why Can’t They?

Unionization efforts have been all over the news lately. Employees across the country are demanding higher wages, better benefits and hours, improved working conditions — and ultimately a voice.

The efforts of Amazon warehouse workers, in particular, have generated buzz. Starbucks, Apple and other big names have been pulled into the conversation, too.

But here’s what Well-Paid Maids founder Aaron Seyedian wants to know: If Well-Paid Maids can pay employees living wages, provide them benefits and ensure safe working conditions… why can’t these big-time corporations?

Well-Paid Maids pays employees a starting wage of $20 an hour. Amazon, on the other hand, increased its average starting pay to just $18 an hour for warehouse and transportation employees last year.

Well-Paid Maids provides employee benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance with 80% employer-paid premiums; 22 paid days off per year; employer-paid commuting; and more. Meanwhile, the Amazon Labor Union is fighting for better benefits in their new contract.

Well-Paid Maids ensures employees work a typical full-time day and get regular breaks. Cleaners never work weekends unless they ask. The company also uses green cleaning supplies, not only to help the environment but also employees’ health. (Employees who’ve worked at other cleaning companies complained of chronic coughs and headaches from chemicals.)

In contrast, one of the biggest demands from Amazon union organizers is better working conditions. Warehouse workers have reported long shifts with few breaks and high injury rates.

And Aaron fully supports unionization. If his employees wanted to unionize, he’d back them — not fight them.

What workers around the country are fighting for right now is exactly why Aaron founded Well-Paid Maids back in 2017: to prove that paying employees a living wage and providing a comprehensive benefits package is possible in the cleaning industry and beyond.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
