“Everything Is Beautiful” With the National Gallery of Art

Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of artist Alma Thomas, a pioneer in her field whose work enriched the cultural heritage of both Washington, D.C. and the nation.

Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 22-23: Virtual Symposium

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation president Elizabeth Alexander, and Studio Museum director Thelma Golden provide a virtual kick-off to our two-day symposium exploring Thomas’s life in Washington, D.C. Register here.

Friday to Sunday, Sept. 24-26: Community Celebration

Explore beauty as Alma Thomas did. Join us in the National Gallery’s East Building from 1-5 p.m. for self-guided experiences featuring:

  • Free art kits with a coloring book of works of art by local artists, coloring materials, and a cutout doll designed by Brittany Jackson, illustrator of the acclaimed children’s book Parker Looks Up: An Extraordinary Moment.
  • A special flower display inspired by Alma Thomas’s Pansies in Washington (1969)
  • A display showcasing works by local community members, celebrating Alma Thomas’s art and legacy
  • 50% discount on gelato inspired by Alma Thomas at the Espresso & Gelato Bar
  • 15% discount on shops purchases with the code ALMA15 (onsite and online)
  • A performance from Howard University Bands at 4 p.m. on Sunday
