“Yards Place will be curb-less, cobblestone and pedestrian-oriented, creating a highly walkable destination anchored by the Anacostia River and Nationals Park.”

From a press release:

“Brookfield Properties, the global real estate services company, announced plans for its highly-anticipated Phase II of The Yards. Phase II will deliver 3.4 million SF of new development across 10 buildings that will provide office, mixed-income residential offerings, restaurants, retail, and public amenities. Notably, Phase II will introduce Yards Place, a main street that runs from the Navy Yard Metro to the new Diamond Teague park on the Anacostia riverfront. Yards Place will be curb-less, cobblestone and pedestrian-oriented, creating a highly walkable destination anchored by the Anacostia River and Nationals Park.

Once completed, The Yards will be the largest waterfront development in the DC Region, encompassing 48 acres, including 6 acres with water frontage, with a total of 2 million square feet of office space, 400,000 square feet of shopping and dining space, 3,400 residential units and 7.5 acres of public green space. Phase II of The Yards will deliver 1,260+ new multi-income residences, 1.8 million SF of office space, including exclusive waterfront office, and over 43K SF of newly reclaimed waterfront park space.

“The second phase of The Yards is reshaping the Capitol Riverfront by transforming the area into a true downtown with imaginative open-air spaces and retail, residential, and office from some of the best architects in the world,” said Toby Millman, Senior Vice President of Development for Brookfield Properties. “We’re excited for these new additions to the neighborhood and to continue the tradition of our community-wide events and activations in our many open-air public spaces. Brookfield is building off of the huge success of Phase I of The Yards to create a distinctly 21st-century mixed-use neighborhood.”

The forthcoming elements in the second phase of The Yards will be designed by world-class architects like Selldorf, SHoP, Leong Leong, Concrete, Studios, Scape and more. All of these architects were chosen for their high-level and forward-thinking designs, as well as their precise attention to detail in past projects and biophilic design elements. All of the buildings will be built to LEED Gold standards and will maximize opportunities for solar energy wherever possible. While each of the new buildings and spaces at The Yards will have its own distinct identity, these elements will come together to create a dynamic, detailed, and textured space for all to enjoy.

Phase II will bring more bright, open green space to the public and buildings sculpted around generous private terrace space for tenants- features that are integral to modern cities of the future and health and wellness considerations following COVID-19. All of the buildings in Phase II will be within a three-minute walk from the water and the large public gathering spaces that will allow The Yards to continue its arts and events programming, which already includes popular events like Light Yards, Ice Yards, and Rosé All Day.

Last February, Phase II began with the groundbreaking on 1250 New Jersey Avenue, the 300,000 square foot headquarters for Chemonics International. Chemonics’ move to The Yards will consolidate the company’s four D.C.- area locations and serves as the official kick-off of the waterfront development’s highly-anticipated second phase.

Since the opening of Yards Park in 2010, Phase I of The Yards focused on the reuse and conversion of several historic Navy Yard structures, integrated with architecturally compatible new development, set in the context of Yards Park. After The Yards was acquired by Brookfield in late 2018, the project has been reinvigorated with a fresh new outlook. The result of The Yards’ first phase is a dynamic community with hundreds of beautiful residences, chef-driven restaurants, and exceptional public spaces for the community. Phase II will be a continuation of these ideals that make it the premier waterfront neighborhood in DC.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
