Past Tense Yoga Studio Moving Locations in Mount Pleasant Due to Covid

From Past Tense:

“In January, Past Tense is moving to a new space in Mt. Pleasant.

For more than a decade, we have supported and served this community. COVID has now fundamentally changed the small business landscape. We need your help to ensure we can continue to do so for years to come.

While we love our quirky space, its unique shape and lack of ventilation from windows sealed shut decades ago, make it impossible to safely gather as a community. Happily, we found a new, larger space just a half-block away. In January, we will move to the garage space behind Elle. Formerly storage and office space for Old School Hardware,

the new Past Tense features exposed brick walls, large windows that open, and an immense amount of possibility. We also expect it to be just a little bit quieter than our current location.

Developing a new Past Tense will require your support. The new space necessitates a full build-out. I have applied for several grants to fund much of the work. We still need to raise a significant amount of money–so, we are introducing the Past Tense Patronage Program. Below you’ll find more information about the new space, including pictures and answers to anticipated questions. You’ll discover more details about the patronage program and learn about some exciting changes to our fall schedule. Of course, you can always drop me a note or find me on my mat at one of our outdoor yoga classes.

I cannot thank this community enough. Our team of amazing teachers has tackled this new world of online classes with grace and humor. They continue to hold space for us even when we all turn off our cameras and make them face rows of black squares. Thank you. To you, our students, your emails of encouragement, your patience with technical difficulties, and willingness to keep showing up has bolstered us more than you know. Thank you.

Stay well,
Kelly

What is the timeline for the move?

Past Tense will be leaving our current space at the end of October. We take over the new space January 1, 2021. The build-out is anticipated to take two months. We hope to be able to open for in-person classes in April, health guidelines permitting.

Did you say in-person classes?

I did! Our new space is large enough that we will be able to open for in-person classes under the Phase 2 guidelines, which require ten feet between students in all directions. However, we will continue to proceed with an abundance of caution and adhere to conservative expert recommendations. So we hope to re-open in the spring, but it will depend on a lot of factors.

Even when we can open, we will likely follow a hybrid model and continue to offer live stream and outdoor classes as we do now plus small-group, in-person classes. These small-group classes will be series-based and reservation-required so you would be with the same six people each week.

You’re leaving the current space by the end of the month?

We are! If you left behind a mat or other gear, please email us to arrange pickup. Also, we will be selling several items including the lobby chandelier, benches, cupboards and desk. We will also be selling some props and all of the beautiful artwork hanging on the walls. Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook group for details.

I’m so excited! What can I do to help?

Us too! There are two key ways to help:
1. Keep practicing with us through our on-demand, live stream and outdoor classes. It is wonderful emotional encouragement and financial support.

2. Become a Past Tense Patron. As a thank you for your generous contribution, we have a selection of thank-you gifts that match your giving level. And, forget the worm. Early-bird patrons who donate in the first two-weeks of our campaign (by Oct. 15), receive an additional, surprise gift.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
