Reader Reports New Heights Restaurant and Gin Joint hopes to reopen in October

2317 Calvert Street, NW

Update: jhcvt366 writes in the comments:

“New heights is not closing permanently. They covered the bottom floor to hide the liquor while closed but plan to reopen in October. Unsure why the phone is disconnected. Spoke directly with the owner.”

Joanna reports: “Will miss their incredible gin selection!”

Unfortunately New Heights Restaurant’s phone has been disconnected. New Heights opened in 1986. Their website says:

“New Heights is a perennial, classy sight to behold anytime of year ….. especially in springtime when the lovely lines, colors and wood tones of the Gin Joint fold outside into the intimate, Patio-on-Calvert with its verdant, colorful plantings.

Yes, the Gin Joint does make its own house-made, small batch tonics … and brings tonic lovers those specialty off-the-shelf bottled tonics tonic lovers love!

Thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that open up the cozy Gin Joint onto Calvert Street, the Patio and bar merge into a delightful meeting place for drinks and casual dining. The vista offers diners a mesmerizing visual oasis in the city: DC’s own resplendent Rock Creek Park, the lush Klingle Valley running beneath the art deco Taft Bridge, its historic corner lanterns lighting up Kalorama’s romantic, tapering cityscape.”

Updates as more is known.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
