Bread for the City, the nonprofit that has been assisting the low-income population of Washington for 45 years, hopes to serve 11,000 residents this holiday season with turkey or ham family meals during its annual “Holiday Helpings” campaign. That’s 2,000 more neighbors than last year — but Bread for the City can’t do it alone.
“We firmly believe no one should have to forego holidays, celebrations and family traditions due to financial circumstances,” Bread for the City said in a statement. “That’s why we rally with our community each year to provide neighbors living on low incomes with a meal to share with loved ones.”
A contribution of $38 feeds a family of four with a sit-down meal, complete with the traditional trimmings; a donation of $152 feeds four families. Nearly a quarter of Washington’s residents are living with low income, and half of the children living east of the Anacostia River are experiencing food insecurity. Bread for the City offers assistance to over 31,000 residents with health care, clothing, legal and social services, community organizing and food pantries.
