National Cathedral Lights Up the Holidays with Family Musical

The folks behind the Washington National Cathedral have put together an inspiring afternoon and evening of family-friendly programming called “Holiday Light Spectacular” that will be an unforgettable visual and aural experience for all ages.

The immersive indoor light show designed by Elizabeth Coco and Atmosphere Lighting is just one part of the activities, as the historic neo-gothic cathedral is turned into a winter wonderland on Friday, December 27 at 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The 45-minute program, ideal for children, repeats at the same times on Saturday, December 28.

Music performed by a live orchestra will fill the Cathedral as it accompanies a screening of the 1982, 30-minute animated classic, “The Snowman,” based on the 1978 picture book by Raymond Briggs. That will be followed by musical performances of holiday songs — including singalongs such as “Silver Bells” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”– by soprano soloist Crossley Hawn, and “illustrated” by a moving light spectacular designed for the Cathedral’s vaulted ceiling and soaring columns.

Admission to the light spectacular, the animated film-with-orchestral accompaniment, and the vocal concert is $40. See this site for ticket availability. There is free parking in the Cathedral’s underground garage.

The Cathedral is at 3101 Wisconsin Avenue NW.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
