Plan B for Stranded Commuters: A Free Ride Home, Thanks to Commuter Connections

Commuters who share their daily rides with car or vanpools at least twice a week sometimes worry about how they’ll get home if the day’s driver suddenly can’t drive.

The car breaks down, the driver has to work overtime, or they leave early because of an illness — their own or a family member — are all very likely scenarios facing commuters.

But Commuter Connections “Guaranteed Ride Home Program” takes the worry out of the equation by offering up to four free rides a year when an unexpected emergency arises. The idea behind the concept is to encourage more ridesharing to help alleviate traffic congestion, environmental damage and other traffic-related impacts by assuring a free ride home.

The same offer is made to those who use other regional commuter travel options like transit or bicycling. Staying late for unscheduled overtime? No worries, you still have a ride home.

Knowing there is a guaranteed ride home — between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. weekdays — allows commuters to use transit and carpools with peace of mind. There is no cost or commitment to join or renew each year.

New members in the Washington and Baltimore regions can sign up for the program here or call 800-745-RIDE. See the Commuter Connections website here for details on the Guaranteed Ride Home and the restrictions.

Commuter Connections, the regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, offers free services and programs that help employees and employers throughout the region find the most cost-effective, convenient and safe commutes. Direct ridematching services, public transit, HOV/Express lane, park-and-ride lot, bicycling and teleworking information are among the services Commuter Connections has been promoting since its founding in 1974.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
